We live in Jersey and have the priveledge of house/pet sitting for the condo of some well to do friends while they take take a long retirement trek through other countries.
My husband works in the Union Square area and is used to walking through the small park. He was mugged by knifepoint. He gave the guy his wallet and the guy looked through it (people carry dummy wallets to give crooks sometimes.)
While the mugger was perusing his catch my husband arranged his keys with points sticking through the fingers and closed his fist and slugged the guy who started bleeding (maybe lost a tooth) and dropped the money and ran away.
The best part is that he reported it to the police, who said they had stationed plainclothes people there as the guy had done this before. They caught the guy and my husband saw him in prison garb cleaning the park under supervision.
The cops in New York have sure changed. Polite, responsive, engaged, much younger than before and in shape. I am so proud of the change in the city.
Times Square is no longer full of the sleeze that I had to walk through to get to the Port Authority to take my bus home.
The condo is a short walk to Central Park. I think some of the gals of the View live in the area and Mayor Bloomberg. Maybe we'll run into him because he takes the subway to work sometimes. He's done such a great job.
I can't wait.
