If you do not need a roof over your head, either to rent or buy, NYC is great and not expensive. Ethnic restaurants allow you to eat well and inexpensively, public transportation within city is great, and if in Manhattan, you can pretty much walk anywhere.
The problem is that we all do need a roof over our heads! If you are thinking of entering the real estate market as either a renter or a first time buyer, forget it. Real estate is out of reach for the majority of people in the world. Prices are astromical- way over $1,000 per square foot and thus event he samllest cubbies prohibitively expensive.
