I've lived in NYC Manhattan/Bronx all my 25 yrs of life. I went to a private Catholic school, and attended one of the TOP universities in the Nation (not good at spelling, LOL). I've also travelled to many southern states and this is my opinion...I Love NY, but...
1. Yes it is stressful at times but the convenience of being able to travel, work, entertain by simply jumping on a train, bus, makes the quality enjoyable, unlike the south where you NEED a car and entertainment is limited (from a diverse standpoint). You have Museums, Zoos, Arts, Dance studios, Broadway shows, Off brdwy, Parks, Recreation facilities, Skating, Rock climbing, Wine tasting, ANYTHING & EVERYTHING you can imagine doing you can do it here.
2. Yes its expensive, NYC is BUSINESS, and you are Paying for it. We have some of the best Schools, police dept, High paying jobs (HS degree 30K+, College degree 50K+, Grad degree 80K+) but the curb appeal, culture, and safety is what you are paying for. I am currently thinking of getting my MBA and I have atleast 4 universities to choose from that all Rank as Top in the NATION...With that said comes a bigger starting salary. Even if you don't have a degree there are sooo many Sales positions, and Trade jobs paying top dollare, BUT there is competition since we have a HIGH POPULATION. I don't worry about that because Entreprenuers are going left & right.
The key is to live below your means.
How to do that you ask? Get a roommate, live in one of the 5 boros, or border NJ, or long island. buy bulk, save, save, save, find free events, they exist! if you go to school get scholarship! a must, bargain, bargain, bargin.
Saftey - key-any place too far out into a particular boro is usually not good, hence the apts closer to manhattan are more expensive, safer, culturally diverse. Manhattan - i think good all over during the day, but the freaks do come out at night. Bronx - um, East side along 6 train better than the rest. Brooklyn - um, I personally don't like it, but I hear areas are becoming better (ones closer to Manhattan). Queens - pretty good don't go too far. Staten Island - who lives there? LOL its Ok, you don't here much on the news about them. Long Island - too far for me but its big and has some good areas. Border NJ - bergen county, Hudson county the best.
Now about the southern states...I love diversity! and I simply do NOT see that enough in parts of GA, NC, SC, VA, MD, DC, MI. I am a city girl, therefore I find myself g
