Review of Phoenix, Arizona

We wish you would move back home.

All these people from east of the Mississippi thought they wanted something different and when they got it they complained it wasn't like where they're from. If you can't take the heat that's fine, if you had grown up in the Sonoran desert, a winter in the Northeast would seem like hell on earth. Culture is a funny word that gets thrown around a lot with cities, if you wanted an older urban american city you could go just about anywhere in the East and find that. We have generations of english and spanish speaking culture and history here in the most unique biological region in America. We have our own culture here established and in ways it is still evolving. It's not static, it's one of the largest cities in the nation and it's still growing and defining itself and it's something worth witnessing. Before you leave, see the desert covered in wild flowers when it's seventy degrees every day for months. Arizona has every biome except for rainforest and tundra. There's forests and all sorts of real wilderness. I read a lot of negativity about Mexicans from other entries. They're not all illegal, many of them have been here since this was Mexico and if they speak spanish around you it's no different than Italian Americans speaking Italian in Brooklyn. It doesn't have to be scary, it's just different. We have lots of Mexicans here like some parts of the country have lots of black people or are all white. Probably though you should return to Averageville Ohio, Massachussetts, Virginia etc. and brag about museums and plays you never go to and think natural beauty is a bunch autumn dead leaves.

Sounds like a typical Phoenix native who has no clue what the words "quality of life" mean. Unfortunately, this is the kind of knee-jerk, narrow mindset you'll encounter provided by the state's 49th-ranked public education system. And any bit of common sense gets zapped by the time most of the native Phoenicians reach adulthood. I don't know if it's the sun or drugs, or something in the air or water which are probably both contaminated. The idea of culture is quickly lost in your miserable world of vapid commercialism, overpriced stucco housing and petty road rage. Someone mentioned to me that Phoenix is like an unholy marriage between a tattooed, cracked-out stripper and right-wing Christian fundamentalist. Whatever it is, it's not working and the city is in a serious decline post housing boom. There's a reason that the majority of the best colleges and universities in the US are east of the Mississippi. And it's because the Southwest generally places little emphasis on learning and education, the one thing this country has left in its role as a service economy. I and many others will be heading out of here; enjoy your 4 dollar/gallon gas, skyrocketing electric bills, depreciating home values and gridlock traffic.

Well put. I have trouble defending Phoenix sometimes, because I am a mountain native( Flagstaff and Show Low). I do prefer Tucson over Phoenix as far as urban areas go, put Phoenix is in the midst of creating it's new identity as a legit destination. Until a/c was invented, none of the chickens#*%s from back east would come here. Now they are all here, and they are all complaining. Before they complain again, maybe they should check out Jerome, or Kartchner Caverns, or the Chiricahua Mountains, or the Huachuca Mountains, or Show Low or Flagstaff, or Wine Country(Elgin, Sonoita etc) or the Rim. Oh wait, they don't know a thing about biological diversity. The do seem to know alot about museums and concert halls that they've never been too. :)
