Review of Portland, Oregon

Why we are moving to the area
Star Rating - 2/23/2010
My husband and I are from the Metro-Detroit area; and if you think Portland is reeling from the "economic downturn" you have seen nothing! Coming from a city that had based its ENTIRE economy on the auto industry, I can tell you that things here are really down and dirty.
We began searching for a new place to live once we settled on career choices that did not really fit into the lifestyle in the area. My husband is an artist, musician, and graphic designer, while I look to open a Holistic Wellness Center in the eventual future. Most people in the area here are not concerned with health and the west coast is an area very friendly to this type of thinking already.
We wanted an area that had an avid outdoor community, was pet friendly and very eco-conscious. We also wanted great public transportation, a varied economy, and a strong arts/music/cultural attration. The micro-breweries help too! And thankfully, I Love the rain and realize that this helps things stay lush.
After a long search, we kept coming back to Oregon. Over and over again. We looked into graduate schools and couldn't be happier about transplanting our fledgling family to the area w/in the next 6 months. Thankful also that we are into careers at this point and not just looking for a "job."
Keep up the good work Portland!

A client of mine told me that I would love Oregon. I have never even thought about it and know nothing about it. As I read and watch videos it looks amazing!!! I would love to also be involved in a holistic center! Iwant to have local organic farmers markets, and see waterfalls! I would love to be in touch with you, if you are planning to have a holistic place :) email me please! daslana@comcast.net. I do not plan on moving there for sure but would love a contact info :) in case I do!

If you are still looking for a residence, check out Daybreak Cohousing, a very eco-friendly community that just opened in the fall of 2009 and is recruiting members. Homes are 1, 2 and 3 bedroom and the community is on a transit line. Details about cohousing in general and the Daybreak community are at www.daybreakcohousing.org

A friend of mine moved here from Detroit for similar reasons and recently returned to Detroit. If you are independently wealthy and you don't need to make money in your "career" then Portland (or Eugene) would be fine for you. If you still need a "job," then it might have to be somewhere outside the artist/wholistic service trade. A few others beat you here several years ago on that, and the vast majority who actually stayed work at those helpful micro-breweries as servers. As for Eco-Consciousness, there is some self-delusion about that and Portland. The "green industry" has been trying to get a foothold here for a few years, and it was by and large a transplant from Southern California. Generally, though, Portland has never been an ecological disaster like SoCal, so mainly the green industry here has been more of an enthusiasts club with few real gains over what we already had. If anything, the environment here has deteriorated in the past few years simply because so many moved here. Perhaps you should just visit for a few weeks in January or February. Take it all in, then consider the SFO Bay Area.....

OH MY GOD, YOU TWO ARE PERFECT FOR PORTLAND. I JUST GOT BACK FROM TOLEDO, OHIO YESTERDAY, THINKING I COULD FIND A HOUSE I COULD AFFORD WITH MY $30,000-----WELL, IVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS. WHEN THESE PEOPLE SAY PORTLAND "IS REELING" FROM ECONOMIC DOWNTURN, THEY HAVE NOTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT BY COMPARISON TO DETROIT. THEY ARE EVEN TALKING ABOUT RAIZING AREAS BECAUSE OF THE 100'S AND 100'S OF BOARDED UP DELAPITATING HOUSES. TOLEDO IS THE SAME WAY. I COULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I SAW. IT WAS QUITE SAD. ANYWAY, YOU WILL FIT RIGHT IN IN PORTLAND. GET YOURSELF SOME WOOL SOCKS AND SOME BIRKENSTOCKS, WALK IN THE RAIN, GET POLITICALLY ACTIVE AND WALK THROUGH THE STREETS, YOU WILL LOVE IT THERE. YOU WILL NEED TO DRINK MORE COFFEE BECAUSE THE GRAY/RAIN WILL WANT TO PUT YOU INTO HYBERNATION. WELCOME
