Review of Portland, Oregon

Crime Index A Little Off Base
Star Rating - 12/28/2007
From what I have read, Portland, OR, which has a crime index of 7, is much safer than Santa Fe, to which you assigned a crime index of 3. This information came from the Frommer's series of books. From what I've read, I'd actually feel safer in my own skin in Portland than in Santa Fe.

Not to jump on a bandwagon without more than fleeting knowledge, but the bike theft rate is supposed to be astronomical in Oregon. My sister had a bike implement (toddler car) stolen right off her front porch. Some nerve, eh? I'll be happy to ride my bike around with the other bike nuts in the bike-friendly cities of OR, but I'll also be careful to lock it up for the widely-coveted item that it is. FYI.

Think again--while violent crime may be low in Portland, there's a lot of burglaries and car break-ins.

You may want to dig a little deeper, as relocation is a major decision. Sperlings allows you to zoom out to the metro area. Doing so gives crime rates of 4,5 for portland and 3,3 for santa fe. A really in depth examination reveals that the ratio of portlands daytime population to nighttime is much higher than santa fe's. That tends to distort crime stats. If crime is really a major issue, why not consider some of the low crime portland suburbs, like sherwood or even newberg?
