Review of San Diego, California

La Jolla is gorgeous but we want to move
Star Rating - 10/1/2007
We live in the village of La Jolla California which is a charming wealthy coastal community just north of San Diego proper. The sky is always blue, the weather nearly always pleasant, and the views of the coast are spectacular. The village itself is often compared to small European villages. So, what's not to like? Believe it or not, we're finding that 365 days a year in paradise can be a bit tedious. We miss the seasons. The cost of living (especially of housing) is very very high. The people are a bit "California" (and I'm a native), which is to say -- they don't call it la-la land for nothing. We're wondering about Connecticut (close enough to commute to the City) or maybe Westchester County. Anyone with suggestions, please let me know.

Christine, I love how you ended your bitchy rant with "best wishes". Passive aggressive much? La Jolla is pretty, but its people are vacuous! I never had one intellectually stimulating conversation the entire time I lived there. I'd take a harsh Winter surrounded by grounded, people of substance, any day!

You sound as if you can no longer afford the area and the state's increasing economic woes and are looking for a reason to leave. Please do not bad mouth one of the most scenic, all-American beach areas just because of your circumstances. Hands down, in my family’s opinion, the stuffy estates of Westchester County, the grime and crime of L.A., and NYC, and the uptight, pretentious attitudes of the east coast Connecticut crowd not to mention the awful, cold, stormy weather make me comforted to live my life in La Jolla, where people still smile and wave hello when they pass you on the street because they appreciate living in such a beautiful community! You will miss it when you are stuck in commuter traffic, on icy roads with dirty brown slushy “snow” lining the streets, and when you exit your vehicle sub zero wind chill freezes the tears in your eyes and skin on your face! Maybe you need to leave to appreciate what you have in La Jolla. I am a first generation French blooded American, who earned two graduate degrees and am a right wing moderate, in case you are wondering...not that it matters. San Diegans have been nothing but gracious to me... Best wishes!

My husband and I just moved from Rye, NY to La Jolla, CA. If you can't handle living in a nice place like La Jolla I don't how you could handle any place back East.

I agree. There is only so much PRETENTION -- backed up by STUPIDITY -- that an individual with a conscience can handle. San Diego has definitely oversold itself. It is the California dream if you are a completely brain dead moron

Sharron, move move move out East!!! California is sooooo overrated!! I, sadly, live in CA too and I miss the seasons. If you have the money I would go ahead and move to New York, NY. Why waste hours commuting?!? Don't think that I am implying that you should use public transit, nasty, by all means drive to work!

Wish I lived in San Diego, or any place along the Calif coast. I visited the USA on vacation two years ago and love the place. If you want to see hardship and unemployment Google "Jarrow Tyne & Wear. I left the place as soon as I could. Mind you I had to join the Britsh Army to do so.

Wow sounds like living in perfect weather has deadened your senses,i moved east 3 yrs ago and not only do I think the people are rude and hardened by the hard life harsh weather brings they never crack a smile. I'm fighting to work my way back to California where people are healthy, happy and smiling. Good luck with Connecticut which is crazy spendy and gray ugly skies to boot.

Sharron, I am from CT (moved to NYC as a teenager) and my family is still in CT. CT is expensive, cost of living "through the charts," but it is a terrific state. Wonderful focus on education, 2 hours to NYC, 2 hours to Boston, beautiful seasons, wonderful beaches (sailing, windsurfing, etc), great towns like Greenwich, Westport, Madison, Guilford (along the coast). I am thinking of moving to La Jolla area for 18 month assignment or so ... Thanks for your insights!

I hope you have a good time finding a place. I understand that Cali is not for everyone and also, moving adds a sense of joy in life. Change is the source of being content since people who accept change always have something new to look forward to or work on. Although I love Cali, every place in the world offers something great. My advice is to make sure you dont rush your decision in any way and get a place that satisfies what you truly want in this new chapter of your life. For others reading this comment, Please don't make this thread about proving which place is better to live in. We need people to like Cali and we need people to appreciate the rest of the world. Think about it this way - if everyone loved one loved and lived in Cali, we wouldn't be able to enjoy the state for what it is. Also, one person moving somewhere else doesn't affect you, so be happy for them and move on with your own life.

Do you mind if I ask what you pay for housing there? (2 BR, 1500 sq. ft., good neighborhood, $2000/month for example)
