Review of San Diego, California

San Diego going downhill
Star Rating - 10/30/2007
San Diego will probably always look good to the casual tourist. The weather is beautiful -- as are the beaches, Balboa Park, and the newly revitalized downtown. But look more closely, and you will find that many of the pretty neighborhoods you are passing through are full of litter and graffiti. Drivers are not just inconsiderate, they are insane. I've dragged more dead animals off the roads; but then, why not aim that SUV at the poor cat or dog crossing the road? Animals don't matter. Have to get there on time! You will notice that San Diegans do not look American -- because, basically, they are not. There are almost one million Mexicans (with probably a quarter of them here illegally), not to mention a slew of Third World immigrants from perhaps one hundred countries. Don't count on people being able to converse with you in anything other than pidgin English. The white American part of San Diego mainly consists of country folk (some call them rednecks) living in East County and -- well -- that's it. Rich areas like La Jolla, Coronado and Rancho Santa Fe are home to wealthy Third World immigrants as much as they are home to wealthy whites. For example, all those Mexican billionaires who fail to invest in Mexico and duck paying taxes there, thus causing even more poor Mexicans to come to this country. Immigration is a wonderful thing, I suppose, but the kind of immigration we have going on now means gangs, drug trafficking, crime and failed public schools. Busing spreads the pain around, so don't think that public schools will be significantly better in wealthy suburbs. Outside of Poway, they won't be. If you want a decent education (and safe campus) for your kids, get ready to pay for private school. The "conservative" Union Tribune welcomes all the illegal immigration, and accuses anyone who questions our government's failure to enforce the law of being "racist". San Diego's infrastructure (outside of downtown) has fallen apart. The money that was supposed to pay for it was given to city employee unions who, along with developers, basically run the show down at city hall. San Diego's streets are full of potholes, sewer and water lines are on the verge of collapse. And our political leaders' "solution" to these problems is to tear down the few charming and historic older neighborhoods and fill them with highrises, thus destroying the quality of life of existing residents while enriching developers. San Diego's pattern of development pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the way this city is run. Suburban sprawl everywhere, with huge houses on tiny lots so that people have no privacy and no backyard for enjoying the great outdoors (no wonder so many people are fat). Housing built in wildfire zones. Development continuing apace even though we have no water (90% of our water is imported from unreliable sources.) People here have absolutely no appreciation for the environment; growth is their religion. Now, just add the "We are one big happy family and don't want to hear anything negative, ever" attitude so prevalent here, and you will see that San Diego will never amount to anything more than a place to see pandas and Shamu the Whale. Sad. It could be so much better.

Oh, and the public schools are paid per each child's attendance. So if your child breaks a leg (as mine did) and they end up missing more than 10 days of school in one semester for some reason or other (physical therapy), EVEN with DOCTOR's excuses, they will most likely fail their classes, even if getting 'A's. It's all about the money. Which also means that disciplinary actions are RARELY taken because the only way to discipline a child here is with suspension, but they won't get their money! So, children are cussing at their teachers on a daily basis and getting away with A LOT more than they should!

VERY TRUE!!! Spoken like a person who maybe has regrettably been here as long as I have. I am a native, with my only family here, but hoping to bust a move in 2008!!! THis is a dog-eat-dog city. You will be eaten alive if you have any integrity or trust. Hard to find a decent "anybody" - mechanic, dentist, doctor, boss... This is a city where BS flies HIGH! If you are a single income person, you end up working so much you are either too tired to enjoy "Amer Finest City" or don't want to deal with the crowds (of mostly RUDE people). Some areas are better than others, but I think "crystal-meth" users have nearly sucked the soul out of the city. I own a condo (that I most likely could not afford if I bought it today and I am a Master degreed environmental scientist) and in the last year have been nearly "bullied" into hating to go home!!! I have KKK gang bangers renting on one side with there BOOM music, a bully dumping his "personal job" waste in my rose planter on one side, and on the other a guitar-star wannabe!!! AND I ONLY HAVE the 3 COMMON WALL NEIGHBORS!!!! Home owner assoc won't to do anything either!!! I always hated the idea of renting again, but will to get away until I am blessed to get out completely. I am not the only person, obviously by these e-mails, but also by personal "survey" of other decent people wanting out or who have gotten out and will NEVER return. I say, move the border line up near Fresno, along with the deficit and hospitals going under due to social security injustice of taking from the legitimately WORKING, and poor elderly tax payers!!! Not only are housing costs crazy here, but gas is higher than almost any city in the US, and even traffic tickets are a minimum $250 and above...even for the slightest offense. (I'd like to know where all that $ is going?) There are fees for fees even here! Forbes has rated SD the number 1 city in the USA THREE YEARS IN A ROW for highest cost of living in porportion to lowests wages. Good Luck. (SD could be a case study of what will happen to all larger cities in the near future of the USA if things don't change, but I'd HATE to see what SD would be like then!)
