Sky high cost of living

I have lived in SD for 42 years (came with my parents the summer before 7th grade-so I didn't have a choice back then). I've moved away a few times, but have returned because my family is still here.
The cost of living (compared to the rate of pay), as well as traffic has increased to the point where I am seriously looking at other places to live again.
SD has nice weather, but that has never been my reason for returning...I actually like a change of seasons, especially Autumn. It is just my family that keeps me here. My kids are now 19 (almost 20) and 21 (soon to be 22) and so moving is a bit more realistic. Although I will miss being able to see my 11 year old niece and 2 year old niece when I please.
As for people, I can say that I know a lot of people, but have found it much easier to make close friendships in the other places I've lived.... and I have lived in SD a long time! Maybe it is the transient nature of the place. Not sure.
