*Update as of 1/5/2018* Looking at the only two listings in the Aspen Daily News #1. 1 bd 1 ba $2400/mo utilities...? #2 “Space for 4 People with deck” $2500/mo utilities included. The Aspen Times lists: 1bd 1 ba apt $2000/mo plus utes 1 bd 1ba furn apt $2200. 2-3 bd 2 ba (1yr lease) 1,L, Deposit $ “Unspecified” avail Feb 1. Studio + ba in “Aspen Core” $3800 + utilities 6 mo min lease. This IS what Aspen Rentals are all about. They have only increased since the 1990s and will NEVER decrease based upon Aspen’s restrictive land use codes and scarcity of affordable building sites. The problem is further complicated by Aspen’s well-documented sprawl phobia. Lastly, locals who stuck it out in Aspen through the 80s profited immensely when Aspen became a year-round destination of the wealthy who bought out locals capitalizing on the forthcoming and—as of yet unrelenting— increase in real estate value. Aspen lives on the extreme of capitalized American societies which allows it to function as an “international city” in terms of its amenities, rents, prices and extreme inflation each year. Aspen is also small town in terms of 3/4 to yea round residents (under 5000 inside city limits). Things like parking: $5-8 hr depending on which street you choose, groceries and adult entertainment are double in some cases what residents of neighboring Glenwood Springs (40 miles away). A great way to afFord Aspen is to sell your car...if inside city limits you won’t need one unless it is required for work. The free bus takes you around town and runs until 0200. The bars have happy hours and if you have steady employment upon atrival the better option is to get 3 or 4 roommates with steady jobs and level heads to split a 4-5 bedroom home. These go for about $5-6000/month but will usually include utilities and be more steak for the price of ground beef. The key here is to have the right roommates who can provide st least 1st month rent upon arrival. I live Aspen and have been here for over 30 years and I want others to be able to enjoy it by doing it right.
