Review of Corpus Christi, Texas

Very High Crime
Star Rating - 10/3/2007
I spent one year living in C.C. I grew up near Los Angeles and have lived in Atlanta, Denver, San Antonio and NEVER experienced any type of theft. My third day in Corpus and my car window was smashed in and everything stolen from my car. Two things made this very disturbing: 1.) it was in broad daylight by a crowded mall and 2.) EVERYONE in town I talked to about it stated that they too had been the victim of at least 1 (usually 3 to 5) break ins themselves. The police actually asked me what I expected them to do when they showed up (2 hours after I called).
There are too many jellyfish in this part of the Gulf to make ocean playing safe and the heat and humidity are extremely oppressive in the summer. Additionally, if you are white or black you will be discriminated against and treated like garbage. Better brush up on your Spanish too because English is very seldom spoken there (most signs and store product labels are only in Spanish).

First, the fact that you were the victim of ONE nonviolent crime does not mean there is "very high crime". Second, while there is a large Mexican-American population (most whose families have lived in Texas since it joined the US) and you do hear Spanish frequently, English is, by far, spoken much more than Spanish. There is no part of the city where you only see signs and labels in Spanish. As far as discrimination against whites, Corpus is no better or worse than other places when it comes to prejudice. Maybe the Latinos treated you poorly because they sensed your bigotry. Third, I’ve been swimming in the gulf hundreds of times and only got stung by a jelly fish once.

I've been living in central Mexico for over 5 years. Despite all the spectacular press, crime doesn't seem to affect most of us (expatriates). The Mexicans are, for the most part, tolerant of us, which is somewhat amazing when you consider the historical relations between the two countries (I'm a US citizen). I am planning to return to the US and have fancied that I would like living in Corpus Christi since I was a young man but things just never worked out. Nonetheless, the crime rates seem a little high and that is a scary matter for me.

I am from Iowa and just moved here 3 weeks ago. Although there are a lot of run down neighborhoods (i live in one of them now) everyone has been very nice and I have not ran into one person that does not speak english. I am as white as white can be and if you are nice to everyone chances are they will be nice to you.
