Review of Dowagiac, Michigan

Lack of Integrity Doom this Town
Star Rating - 5/4/2018
If you have completed higher education and need a good paying job, keep looking for a place to live. You will not be happy there.

Additionally, the data on Dowagiac from this website speaks for itself. Not good. I agree with the conclusions one can make from the data. I can further provide anecdotal evidence.

High Property Crime - Yes, plenty. People just do not respect the town and assets. The blight problem reinforces these attitudes. I've had windows shot out in my cars, and damage done to property. Property would get destroyed at local businesses as well. Police were not useful in town.

High Violent Crime - Yes, seen people get into fist fights at 3am outside my home. Meth is a problem, thus enforces violent crime.

No landlord oversight from the city. No laws put into to place to protect tenants, so many under served individuals were prayed upon by land lords (some that held public office positions at one point). When City tired to put in contingencies on Landlords, the council didn't have a strong enough spine, and allowed landlords to over turn by lobbying against tenant protections.

City Manager was fired from a different city for sexual harassment, then hired in Dowagiac.

Mayor's Family Trust has been accused of fixing bids on a high-end classic car auction in the past.

Real honest guys running the place.

Sold my house, got the hell out. Best choice I ever made. Town is terminal in it's existence, just a question of 'when.'

Not true about the city manager he left Dowagiac for a City in Ohio. In Ohio is where he was arrested for the crimes he committed there. Dowagiac crime rate is no different for a small city of the same size.Dowagiac schools could be better although there are better than some of the others in the area. It has a nice community college. The area is great all year around for recreational activities. Skiing,Boating, snowmobiling etc. I lived there before kids went to local schools. The city is within a 1/2 hour drive to Lake Michigan beaches. Several inland lakes with in 10 minute drive. Sister Lakes resort area. South Bend / Mishawaka 30 minutes south. I lived on the north side very quiet middle class neighborhood. No problems. Academics in schools okay. Not the best but okay. As a junior or senior in HS duel enrollment with Southwestern Michigan College. College is growing and has a great nursing program. Has on campus housing not to many two year schools do. College campus is nice. The town has a rich industrial history. Athletics not bad. The high school football program was once a perineal power in the state in the 90s but has suffered in the 2000s from what I am told. Nice downtown area some good restaurants. Round Oak, Zekes, Wounded Minnow and Wood Fire.
