Review of Greenville, South Carolina

Not worth the struggle to live here.
Star Rating - 5/6/2019
Not worth the struggle to live here. I lived here for 15 years. No shortage of jobs, but companies treat employees like total garbage. Everyone I worked with said that’s just how it is here. One job was ok until they got bought out and ran off half the workers. I worked in HVAC, and my wife worked in food service while going to college to get her medical degree. Education was so bad my wife switched to a college in another state to finish her degree.

Very unfriendly people. If you don't go to the same church as they do, or are not religious, they will put you down. Saw that happen at a couple different jobs to people I worked with that always worked hard, showed up on time, and did a good job. What gives them the right to judge people? They should read the Bible a little closer and stop being a bunch of lying hypocrites. The people are nice to your face, but give them the chance they will stab you in the back. Not everyone is bad. There is a small group of very nice people, if you can find them.

It’s a shame because Greenville has the best weather on the East Coast and is close to the mountains.

Wow you nailed it. We moved to G'ville in 2009 and the first thought I had was that a lot of people in the 'bible belt' have never read the bible. Lots of little churches full of hatred . Sugar coated rattlesnakes. Oh and the Civil War isnt over for many.

Wow, who's judging who here? Pointing out the right to judge includes you.

Although I do love the amenities that this little big city offers, there are some negatives worth mentioning. As someone stated before, there is an odd obsession with the Civil War here. It isn't uncommon to find people who live outside of city limits with confederate flags on their cars. There are also confederate statues honoring soldiers and generals who fought to preserve the "Southern way of life"- yikes. Although the newcomers and some open minded natives have adopted more liberal perspectives this is still very much a closed minded staunchly conservative county that is all too comfortable with racism. There are a few really good churches here that are welcoming and diverse. You will have to look for them, but they do exist. This is the south after all.. so you're going to run into a lot of the starchy, narrow minded, and Trump loving stereotypes, but the Greenville area still provides the southern charm without as many of the negative attributes of other Southern towns. I really love it here (I live in the Downtown area). If you move here, avoid the Berea and Whitehorse road areas, you will thank me. Travelers Rest (North Greenville) is a mixed bag. On the one hand you do have many of those negative stereotypes mentioned before, but you also have the outdoorsy types who travel there to hike and bike the mountains. Downtown TR is safe, but I stay away from anything outside of a two mile radius from there with the exception of Furman University, a gorgeous campus with mostly out of state students seeking a liberal arts education. There is also Jones Gap, a beautiful hiking spot for a lot of locals and out-of-state visitors. You'll have to drive through a pretty rough area before you get there, so avoid getting out of your car until you've reached. Overall Greenville is a nice place to live, I love it.

That small group of very nice people you spoke of are the handful of us lifetime Greenville natives that are still here. Enough said!

Wow! I couldn't disagree with you more! I've lived here for over 30 years and actually live in Greenville not one of the small very rural towns outside of the city. The city is populated by not only those born and bred in the south but many "transplants" from other areas of the country. The University of SC - Greenville is the only medical school in the area and I am not aware of any University that offers an MD that can be earned online so perhaps your wife was getting a degree in a medical field not an MD?
