Petoskey = Heroin for kids
Star Rating - 7/4/2017
I grew up in Petoskey. We had our first child here. Let's just say under no circumstances would we have stayed had my mom not been sick. We did plan to move right after the wedding, but things happen. Let us fast forward 15 years and we are still here. In the end, I feel my own FAMILY SUFFERED BY Staying. A large majority of the children are addicted to heroin. You my ASK YOURSELF WHY, as it is so beautiful and certainly lots to do (so it looks.) Remember, moat businesses are CLOSED for the winter. Just go down to the county clerks office, look at how many kids die from heroin in one year. Autopsies are public and when you see how bad heroin has hit this town you just may RETHINK moving here with a family. My kids LUCKILY did not get into it, but probably because we have a very strong family unit and family is everything, even before religion in our home. The town really lacks in the arts and they are on their way to NO ARTS IN SCHOOLS. If the majority of the town votes the music program out in lieu of more funding for sports (wresting in PARTICULAR) It will only get worse. When this city had a solid music program for the kids, this heroin was unheard of. Heck, I've seen parents use with kids (public restroom downtown by park) This epidemic knows no social barriers and crosses every different income bracket. Please remember, this is a very poor area, it is undereducated. The way the entire town runs reflects this. Kids love malls, sports and fun stuff. Drugs show their ugly face when you have a group of people who get bored easily. There is beauty everywhere, but can these kids or their parents find it? NOPE. And with a CASINO coming in, comes even more drug use, more thefts, more everything. So even if you are living in Bay Harbor, the drugs are there, too. In fact, it was a local Dr's son (Bay Harbor) that brought Heroin into a 4th grade classroom. The crime in total is just awful. I guess it is hard to understand unless you live here, There is also that whole 'good ole' boy' mentality. You are dealing with the bottom of the barrel here. Most people only work in the summer and count on unemployment the rest of the year. Don't get me wrong, there are PLENTY of good jobs, but you are dealing with a group of people who do not want to work. There are so many other places to live, please think carefully and do some Google searches about the drug/alcohol issue with children in the Petoskey area. All of Northern Michigan has a heroin issue, but Petoskey in particular.

That whole comment is BS...I doubt the person who wrote it ever really lived in Petoskey. There is no major heroin problem, I lived there for 18 years and its no worse then any other small town. Petoskey has year round employment and I don't know of any place that shuts down in the winter. There are plenty of arts in the area and the Petoskey HS band is one of the best in the state, winning competition after competition and half the students in the high school are in the band. Don't believe anything in that above post. Petoskey is a beautiful little town and its a great place to raise kids.
