Sarasota, FL

Great place to visit but didn't like living here. - 2/11/2022
As always, anyone considering moving to anyplace new, including Sarasota, needs to come down and spend a month or two before actually moving here. The city is overrun with wealthy snobbish retirees, the cost of living is very high, and the heat and heavy humidity linger year round. It is like living in a sweaty armpit for most of the year. The beaches are beautiful but access to them is horrible because you can never find a parking spot. Insects, rodents, and reptiles are your year-round roommates. Unless you can afford to live in an uber-wealthy neighborhood and/or send the kids to a private school, the school aren't all that great. Traffic and crowds everywhere. As I said, try it out first before moving down here.

Homestead, FL

I grew up traveling all over the world so being around non-english speaking people doesn't bother me. What bothers me is when you take no pride in the little bit you have and do nothing to take care of it, when you don't raise your children to have respect, and when you would rather sit on your lazy bum than work a job. Sadly, Homestead is full of people who just don't care and seek nothing better for themselves. It shows everywhere. If you want to live in trash and filth, move to Homestead.

Wouldn't that be something you would want to know BEFORE you move someplace entire new?

The French will be disappointed to learn their language will soon be extinct. Maybe someone should tell them that.

I'd suggest you make a trip to Laurel before you think about moving there. Its not nearly as quaint and charming as they'dhave you believe.

Go back to Texas, honey. And next time, do your research before you move.

Nothing but low paying state jobs around here, if you can get one. Florida expects to to survive on the sunshine.

re:
Great rural community to raise a family - 1/28/2020
Unemployed black people living in squalor, 2/3 of the population living on the bare edge of poverty, terrible schools, meth and cocaine everywhere, lack of any employment paying higher than minimum wage and very unfriendly church people sanctimoniously ignoring all the real problems of this town. If that's near and dear to your heart, good for you. BTW, I notice you don't live in Marianna anymore.

I'm a native and can't find a job here. Got an MBA and 25 years experience. Been trying for three years. If all those cylinders are firing, why can't I find a job? Wife and I are packing up to leave this armpit.

Actually this place was great until the 1980's when all the Californians starting moving into the area and brought all their crap with them. This city has never been the same since.

Nothing but a trashpit... - 3/6/2018
I was going to move here to be closer to my sister but I left after only two months. During which time I received a parking ticket (for being legally parked - parking guy had to admit he was wrong in traffic court), being pulled over and forced to show DL, registration, and insurance because I was out driving at 1PM (broke no law, mind you, just got stopped for being out late), and being in two separate traffic accidents (one on Colorado Avenue, another one on Cheyenne Mtn. Blvd.). In addition to that, the cost of living is absurdly high (which is why so many people there live on the streets and panhandle on corners), jobs pay minimum wage or at the most $10 per hour even if you have a Master's Degree, and all the nice hiking places are now home to all the drug-addled weed-smokers. And, yes, I don't doubt the teacher who was treated well always had a job - the education system is horrible and instead of firing the bad ones, the just shuffle them around from one school to the other like they don't get what's wrong. Moved back to my small Kansas town and I'll never leave again.

Hillsboro, KS

re: Note
- 3/6/2018
Hillsboro was in fact a small town already in existence and thriving when the townspeople welcomed the Mennonites in the 1880's. The helped the Mennonites assimilate to the culture and were subsequently overrun by Mennonites.

Sunshine and Sand - 5/22/2016
The quality of life here is very poor. It's hot, humid and sticky almost year round and suprisingly there's still a lot of housing without central air. Bugs and flying insects love it here. They crawl up your sinks, out of your cupboards, and through any cracks they can find. And forget about making a decent living - the State of Florida expects you to live on Sunshine and Sand. The beaches are beautiful but if you want to live there, you better come with a lot of money.

I don't know anything about Papillion but Huntsville, AL is a cesspool. And that's putting it nicely. Traffic flow is awful, roads are in terrible condition, buildings are falling down, crime is rampant, schools are pathetic, and talk about nothing to do! The airport is 15 miles outside of town and good luck finding decently-priced groceries. My daughter recently had to move into a 1-bedroom apartment and it was $850 per month in a run-down neighborhood with few amenities. Hot sticky and humid from April thru October, and always rain, rain, rain.

Aberdeen, SD

re: information about aberdeen . schools, food, ho
- 4/5/2013
According to city-data.com, the cost of living in Aberdeen is 80.4% of the national average. The cost of living in Ravenna, OH is 96.6% of the national average. So, generally speaking, it will be 16% cheaper to live in Aberdeen. If a gallon of milk nationwide averages $3.00 per gallon, that gallon of milk will cost approximately $2.90 in Ravenna; in Aberdeen, it will cost $2.40. Here is the phone number for Country Village Estates: Phone: (605) 229-4343. Call them - I'm sure they will be glad to inform you of cost of lot rent. I would recommend you go to city-data.com for a lot of other statistics on Aberdeen, SD and their are plenty of websites that will give you estimates on car insurance, etc. You can also access the State of South Dakota's website online which will give you information on how much car tags cost. Ditto the same on the City of Aberdeen's website which should give you some information regarding your dog. I don't live in Aberdeen myself but I am a librarian and I just can't resist trying to help someone who needs information. Hope this helps as I see you haven't had any other responses.

Tallahassee, FL

The ArmPit of Florida! - 2/18/2011
Tallahassee is the armpit of Florida! Traffic is horrendous, crime is off the charts, the weather sucks and the schools are the absolute worst! Jobs are crappy - with so many college students/graduates running around town willing for work for minimum wage, employers don't pay more than that to fill even professional positions. Your other choice for employment is to work for the State of Florida and get paid in sunshine. It's nice to have a sunny day but it sure doesn't put food on the table, ya' know what I mean? If you love living in a mosquito-infested swampland next door to white trash living in run-down shacks then come to Tallahassee!

I worked in a school system in this city for three years and although I often had people tell me Chatta. was a good place for bi-racial families, I found that not to be the reality. Chattanooga has A LOT OF racial problems, especially in the school system, and the city neighborhoods are not racially diverse. The minority races live on "their" side of town and all the white people live on "their" side of town. The schools are AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL - overcrowded, decrepit buildings, horrible lack of teaching materials anad teachers with any teaching skills, etc. and a wide disparity of learning levels in every classroom. As for being "scenic", if you call two hills where the rich folk live in order avoid living with those in the "ditch" (read that as poor white trash) between them, "scenic" then you are welcome to it. The cost of living is high and the traffic is horrific. Crime is sky high - murders, rapes, etc. dominate the local news. I moved my bi-racial family to Buena Vista, CO and we are very happy here. You might consider this as a place to move.

re: Crime is Not Evenly Spread Out Here - 9/24/200

Rick Van Wieren must be in the real estate business! He is not giving an accurate portrait of CS. Gangs and other crime are rampant in this city, schools are overcrowded and severely lacking in quality of education. Traffic is awful and good luck getting to know your neighbors - they will only be there for a year or two before the military transfers them. The cost of housing is sky high whether you are renting or buying, salaries are extremely low due to so many military retirees and spouses willing to work for peanuts. The big companies employing lots of people (i.e. Hewlett Packard) are pulling out of here faster than you can snap your fingers leaving unemployment and poverty behind. The city is very conservative and there's a lot of mega-churches and religion everywhere. The view is great, the climate is to die for - but neither one of those things puts food on the table and keeps your family safe.

Marianna, FL

Great Place to live if... - 9/9/2008
... you like heat, humidity, swamps, mosquitos and fleas, and an uneducated population. The schools are awful, awful, awful and there is nothing here. No real "town" - it's all out by the interstate and it's just one chain store after the other. It's 70 miles to Tallahasse, 50 miles to Panama City and 35 miles to Dothan. Be prepared to drive if you want any quality of life at all. Oh, yeah, get religion before you get here (the Baptist kind is preferred) or you won't get invited to anything. We got transferred here by my husband's job with the federal prison system and after 14 months, I fled with the kids and my husband got transferred as soon as he could. This is the most abysmal place we've ever had to endure.
