please do your homework before moving!!!!!!!!! - 3/31/2007
Let me say that i believe every post has some truth to it and i agree with most of them.first let me say that life is what you make it so do your homework first! fl overall is overrated what you see on tv are areas that are for tourist but u need to see the big picture here!! fun decent nite life, low wages(due to immigration), so-so traffic(could be worse),low skill jobs, poor public schools (literacy rate is very low) and transp.(like everywhere), nice, friendly people, housing(own or rent)prices for nice clean, safe place is too expensive. people from ny/nj are even looking to leave due to high cost of living and the low wages (even w/degree!!!) dont brush off the neg. post b/c i did and i am disappointed but experience is the best teacher i'm goin back north/midwest and never again complain. Fl is a great place to visit but not to Read More

i read these comments b/c i like the statistical value ... which is nothing. anywhere u live ... u have to wake up in the morning, go to work for 8 hours (like it or not), pay your bills, go to the gym or bar, chill, go to bed & get up & do it all over again. Do you want a beach, do you want a metropolis, do you want a party, do want to raise a family, do you want to retire ... SERIOUSLY ... think about that ... b/c any American city will offer YOU what YOU want. you'll make what u want of any city ... just know what u want in ur Read More

A different perspective - 3/12/2007
I have read alot of the comments on here, but most seem to be from Northeasterners moving to FL...I am a bit different...I am a late 40'ish year old man, having lived out west for the majority of my life...and I am considering a move to Tampa, FL...

Would love to get the straight scoop from those not fresh out of college, on what the housing (rental...owned a few homes, not so much!) and what the city is all about...jobs, housing, places to go, nightlife, single women MY age and where the beaches are...any help???

A transient students perspective. - 3/12/2007
Moved to Tampa from the D.C. area about a year ago, though I have lived and spent time in Southern California as well. The beaches are great, and there does seem to be a decent nightlife, though I would hesitate to say there is any artistic or creative energy in the city. It may exist, but I havent found it yet. People complain about the traffic (like any city) and it can get congested at times, but it is nowhere near as bad as people would like to think. I spent years in D.C. traffic and Tampa doesn't compare in any way. You may be in traffic here, but you wont spend hours trying to move a mile. The people differ depending on where you go and who you meet, some are laid back and nice while others can be complete morons. My biggest problem is the lack of diversity, artists, or anything creative. After awhile you tend to feel a little isolated from the rest of the world, seeing as besides Orlando (big deal) you have nowhere to go for hours outside the city. Florida to me is all about Read More

People: nice, friendly, diverse, overall great. Jobs: large job market but the wage rate is low in this area due to lack of skill, poor education, and the types of jobs(fast food, general labor, low skill, ect). Education: literacy rate is very low here, and the public school system like everywhere is poor, the higher education system is just as bad according to many students I've talk to U of F is the best school. Housing: You're going to pay high rent regardless if you live in the best areas(New Tampa, Carrolwood, ect.) or the less than average areas (Temple Terrace, Palm river, some parts of Brandon)and if you looking to buy a house florida in general is having housing pains due to the cost of insurance (decreasing soon), property taxes and the cost of housing alone is lack luster. Traffic can be horrible depending on the time of day you travel, however learning your way around the city is easy, poor transportation system also. Nightlife is great, plenty of bars, clubs, parties etc.  Read More

My take - 2/28/2007
I lived in the Tampa area for about 2 years and loved it. I think there are come issues with the heat, bugs/snakes... but that is FLorida. I have been back a few times and the traffic is still bad, but I would move back due to the fact that is was fun. You have many options to keep you busy from Golf, concerts, casinos, Beaches, Nightlife, Sports...
If you can not find something to do in Tampa, it is your fault.
The schools were not that great, all though we did live in a good district.
The only bad thing that would make me hesitate about going back is what you pay for home owners insurance... we were due to pay @ 3k the year we relocated and I am sure it is higher now.Read More
