What happened to Vegas? - 7/16/2012
I moved here 15 years ago from Oregon. I absolutely loved it for the first 10 years. I had plenty of friends and we acted like rockstars. Now most of my friends have moved and my wife and I recently had twins. There is no way I will raise them here. The problem isn't just the schools, it's that there is not much of a family unit here. The kids in the schools often corrupt each other. A lot of the parents here seem to be too concerned with themselves so their kids get ignored. There are major gang problems in the schools here and the kids from good families will have to deal with this. Not what I want for my kids. There are other things about this city that get to me too. The people here can be downright ignorant! From driving on the roads to playing in the park you'll see it all. Also the weather can be extreme at times. I don't mind the heat as long as the a/c works but I hate the cold and I really hate the wind. The roads are extremely slippery when wet and a good storm can flood Read More

worst places to live - 7/16/2012
I agree las vegas is the worst place to live because it is too hot in the summer and casinos will take every single dollar you have with no remorse. I lived in las vegas for 6 months and hated every single day. That's why I moved out. Read More

I don't understand - 4/26/2012
I don't know what to say. I live in Los Angeles. I visit Vegas often. Not even for the gambling, but for the shopping, dining, and the overall energy of the city. For some reason, I especially think Vegas is beautiful at Christmastime. I love the lights. I love the desert landscape. The housing in cheaper. Fuel is cheaper. Everything in the world a person could want (except greenery) "seems" to be there. I'd LOVE to live there. I have no problem with L.A., other than it's expensive, crowded and distended. But I read what I see here, and what everyone says about Vegas. It's so dismal. I can't get over it. I don't understand how a place that has everything in the world to offer, practically, and is in such a beautiful setting, can be such a perfectly awful place to live. I just don't get it. Ok, so it's hot. I prefer that (myself) to the chilly coastal weather in California. No greenery--that doesn't bother me. I grew up in NY. The desert is a novelty to me. Drugs.  Read More

Sooo not-what-it-used-to-be - 2/26/2012
I moved to Las Vegas in the 70's with my parents. I was a teenager at the time. I lived here for years, moved to California for a while, came back, moved out of the Country for a while and came back. So here I am, now with my own family, living back here in Vegas. I have a teenager now who is about the age I was when I moved here originally. Such an incredible contrast between the Las Vegas of then and the Las Vegas of now. I think I have blinded myself into believing it's all as it used to be, when my mother was alive and family and friends loved to come out and visit us and life in Las Vegas, as I perceived it, was fun and exciting. I have a happy memory of my mom and dad, my sister and brother and I getting into our car and going for a drive up and down the 'strip' on summer evenings. The lights were beautiful, bright and twinkling. The summer breeze was warm on our faces and for me, there just wasn't a better place to call 'home'. Now, here in Las Vegas, in 2012, I'm having to Read More

Living in Vegas: No greenery, but lots of lights - 2/9/2012
I often come to sites like this for information from people who have lived in a certain area that peaks my interest. I am well traveled and like to live in different places to experience the local culture.
Las Vegas is a bright glittery city that attracts thousands of tourists every day, and allows a mix of cultures and ideas. Due to the fact that there are so many transients here, local people tend to be isolated and prefer to carry on with their own lives, on their own time. Making friends here is Very difficult and can be wearing. If you're not a social person, you will do fine here. I am single and miss my friends/parties back east.
The pros and cons:
Pros: Rent is relatively cheap here if you take into consideration all of the amenities the apartments offer. Vegas has a bigger than life image to maintain, and therefore it excels at offering better options in units and amenities. For example, most apartments have a washer and dryer inside each unit, most Read More

There is better quality of life elsewhere. - 1/29/2012
After raising my daughter here for the past ten years, and putting her through college, it's time that i bounce from this place. I'm fairly young and this place sucks for the single female who wants quality. One thing i must add, the only plus is the cost of living, and at least i was able to afford sending my daughter off to college in Read More

It's all relative - 12/27/2011
I'm a software engineer from New York & about a year ago I accepted a position that allowed me to telecommute. So I started looking for a more affordable place to live. I chose Las Vegas because of the EXTREME difference in cost of living. It allowed me to go from an 1,950 sq ft, half million dollar house in Westchester to a 6 year old 3,500 sq ft home in Henderson, with a pool for $275k. AND my property taxes dropped from $15,500 to $2,850 AND my state income tax went away saving another $500 a month! The house is beautiful & my neighborhood is wonderful. So I've got nothing but good things to say about Vegas.

As far as the schools are concerned: my children are both in college already so I honestly couldn't tell you one way or the other. And with regard to the crime here: when I watch the news I see all the stories about the the madness going on but that mostly seems to happen in that Winchester to Sunrise Manor area & sometimes in Spring Valley. But you NEVER hear Read More

It's no better anywhere else people - 12/21/2011
We moved from Las Vegas to Bailey, Colorado to be closer to my family who moved from Las Vegas a few years before us. Bailey is in the "foothills" of Denver but we're actually in the middle of the Rockies about 45 minutes from downtown Denver. We thought this would be the ideal place to live and raise a family but people in Colorado are no friendlier then the people in Las Vegas, the traffic is just as awful, there's crazy people trying to shoot up schools or blow up malls like every other month, there's a lot of "stepford" families and it's hard to make connections, if you don't fish, hunt or ski forget making friends, housing prices are still higher then average but we're not getting paid any more then average, more people home school here then anywhere I think because Denver's school system is in big trouble, it's extremely dry and flippin cold! I lived in Vegas for 30 years before moving here and heading back that way but probably to a little quieter town like Mesquite or Read More
