the pros and cons - 1/28/2011
I understand why many people commenting here at Best Places hate Las Vegas. The schools are appalling in Vegas; the place is sleazy with prostitution and confidence games, vice, low-life, and gangs. Crime is high, with drive-by murders and racial tension (all races). There's a great deal of noise and light pollution. The city is rife with sociopaths. If you're someone who loves nature and quiet living, and is not worldly in any way, look elsewhere to live.

On the up-side, housing is now very affordable. In fact, investors are now rushing in to grab up homes as fast as they can because the real estate market is finally appreciating, and investing in property now will yield a great return in four to five years. Jobs are also picking-up. Casinos in Vegas are hiring again, and tourism has improved. By 2012 Vegas will be on its way to becoming a boom town again. Of course, this means more people and more cars, which translates into more smog. Right now the air pollution Read More

Don't listen to these whiners. They are miserabl - 1/19/2011
Moved to Las Vegas 1 year ago to escape Southern California's high cost of living, and the neo-Marxists. I don't regret the move for one minute.

I recently purchased a beautiful home in a gated golf course community. In San Diego, this would have set me back a million and a half. In 2007 the home sold for $435,000 and I purchased for $225,000. Honestly, you can buy a beautiful, nearly brand new, 1800 sq ft. or larger home for $150,000 all day long.

The weather in Las Vegas is amazing. Sunny days with almost no rain are the norm. The months of July and August can be extremely hot, but other than that, the weather is great.

There are plenty of outdoor activities that you can do year round. I fish Lake Mead, and the Colorado river. Cycle around Lake Las Vegas. Hike at Red Rock and plan to start golfing again.

If you want a change of scenery, Southern Utah is only 2.5 hours away. LA and Phoenix are a 4.5 hour drive. If you Read More

DON'T MOVE TO LAS VEGAS, NV - 10/16/2010
There is a world outside the strip,& unfortually it isn,t that great. My advice to anyone who is thinking about moving here DON'T. It is the worst place to raise children, especially the school education. I never in my life have met so many people ( I'm sorry to say ) that are so stupid. It like Vegas attracts them, and the road construction, now come on, how many times does it take to get the roads right. Vegas is known to tear up a road not ONCE OT TWICE, but how about EIGHT or NINE times on the same street or highway & still can't get it right. Oh yeh, let's talk about the greed here. Vegas MOTTO is WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS STAYS IN VEGAS. Well thank goodness, because if I was a city or county offical I would be ashamed for anyone to really knows what goes in Vegas. My family & I are just so tired of the Vegas way & the bs that goes along with it, that we have decided to quit our jobs & leave like many other familes are doing or have done. Maybe someday Vegas will get their act Read More

If you have $$$ to burn, like to party and be pampered, Vegas is for you! "Shop the Planet" is our motto. Everyone else, be cautious, do your homework, it's not the total package. Top two. I came to vegas healthy and financially stable with savings. Now I have Nevada Allergies (everyone gets it); can't sleep, can't breathe and my skin is falling off. Financially it's difficult to live here with a family on a single income. I'm not starving by any means but I have no luxuries. Read More

Leaving Las Vegas - 7/28/2010
Born and raised in Vegas, my children are 3rd generation Las Vegans. I have watched this city morph from a sleepy western town to the Babylon of the western hemisphere. In the 70s and 80s, population was a tenth of what it is today. Horseback riding, fishing at Lake Mead, sledding at Mt. Charleston, beautiful orange and pink desert sunsets, attending good schools with kids you've always grown up with. The tight conservative community pride has been overtaken with transient people, both singles and retirees that have already raised there families elsewhere. They outnumber natives and so the vote goes....no new children's hospitals, or schools or parks, or fire.....The university is a Mickey Mouse school, you'll never get taken seriously elsewhere. The children's education is some of the worst in the nation. We lead as highest suicide rates, drop-out rates, teen pregnancy, most dangerous city, highest foreclosure rate, unhealthiest city. Our air quality is bad, as is what little water Read More

STAY AWAY!!!!!!! - 7/28/2010
Dont come here.. save your morals, value, family, and dont subject your children to the horrors and bad values this town is. I have lived here 22 yrs and have been able to move out of here on 3 different occasions saving myself, wife and 2 kids. Sadly though have been laid off or income has slowed down to where we had to come back to live with family till we get back on our feet. Have owned homes here and lost homes here. have rented 2 different homes where owner not paying his mortgage with my rent money and both houses went into foreclosure while we were in them, This town is a WASTELAND. Full of sleezy degenerates that only care about themselves, prostitutes, no morals, no family values, no culture, untrustworthy neighbors that have been burned to many times so nobody will talk to you. Im gettin my family and I out of here (about 2000 miles away) and never comin Read More

DON'T MOVE HERE!!!!!!!! - 7/28/2010
Ok, as your reading about this town (WASTELAND) you have probably discovered it is not a place for morals, families, kids, men, women, culture, or anything that is "good". I live in the Summerlin area which I believe is the nicest area in this HELLtown. I have been here for 22 yrs and was able to move out 3 different times with my wife and kids and sadly had to move back all 3 times since being laid off due to the recession and staying with our family that lives here to get back on our feet. Have rented 2 homes where owner was not payin his mortgage with my rent money and went into foreclosure. Im in the process of getting a new career about 2000 miles away and plan to stay away this time. Once the Casinos go under this town will turn into a dustbowl full of its current residents of vulchers, sleeze, hookers, and others that dont say hi and only out for themselves. Keep your family away from here... go to a beach for Read More

Materialism - Gotta Luv It - 7/22/2010
I hate Las Vegas. I love Las Vegas.

I've been here 8 years.

All the women are golddigging whores. All the men are materialistic playboys.
And that's the good part.

The cost of living isn't bad.

The summers are brutal with the heat.

The winters are awesome.

The restaurants, concerts and nightlife are bar none.

Everyone is liberal and everything is allowed. If you tell someone you used to be a bank robber or were locked up for murder, no one would judge you. I'm kidding but it's sorta true. Everyone who lives here has a past and nobody judges anyone and I sorta like that. Everyone comes here to better themselves and run away from who they were someplace else.

It's a fantastic place on many levels. You can be whomever you want and everyone won't question it.

You'll never find love. You'll never settle down, find a wife/husband, have 2 kids. Maybe you'll Read More
