What BestPlaces Users Say about Yonkers

Yonkers, New York is a diverse city located just north of New York City. It has a population of over 200,000 and is known for its rich history, waterfront views, and bustling downtown area. It also has various parks, cultural attractions, and a strong public transportation system. However, like any other city, it has its own unique pros and cons that can impact one's experience living there.

User reviews:

- According to John R., "Living in Yonkers has been a wonderful experience for me and my family. We love the diversity, the convenience of public transportation, and the proximity to NYC. The only downside is the cost of living, which can be quite high."
- Mary B. shares, "I've been living in Yonkers for over 10 years now and I have no plans of leaving. The community is welcoming and there are always events and festivals happening. The only complaint I have is the traffic, especially during rush hour."
- In contrast, Alex T. states, "I moved to Yonkers for a job opportunity and I have to say, I'm not a fan. The crime rate is high and I don't feel safe walking around alone at night. The rent prices are also outrageous for what you get."
- On the other hand, Emily S. says, "I've been living in Yonkers my whole life and I wouldn't have it any other way. The city has a rich history and there's always something to do. The cost of living can be high, but it's worth it for the quality of life here."

Overall, while some reviewers enjoy the diversity, convenience, and community of Yonkers, others have concerns about the cost of living, traffic, and safety. However, it seems that many long-term residents appreciate the city's charm and rich culture.

Close to NYC - 2/18/2024
I lived in Yonkers my entire life, close enough to the city with less congestion. Some areas are difficult to access, and you must have a car to get around. There are a lot of cool areas like Ridge Hill, Untermyer Gardens, Downtown Yonkers etc. Very Affordable compared to Read More

Very pleased with my location - 9/5/2021
I've lived in this city for over 20 years in the Bryn Mawr section and I love it. We are the closest suburb to NYC. I can go and watch a broadway show and be back at home in minutes. My neighborhood is clean, quiet, safe and friendly. I have no problem with parking. There's always parking. However the schools need a little Read More

Great to raise kids but it is time to leave (San D - 8/30/2015
My family and I have lived in northeast Yonkers for 18 years after leaving the grime and crime of Manhattan (my home).

I bought a cute colonial on a quiet street 11 years ago and have raised 2 of our 4 children here. Public schools are pretty bad but there is close to zero crime and noise. Sadly, the housing market flipped and I owe more than my house is worth. I am retired and have arthritis so the time is ripe to relocate. I recently visited San Diego on a short trip (six days)and enjoyed the laid-back pace and the chattiness of its residents. I recently retired and have a six figure pension/SS benefit but still have 2 kids living with me and my wife is younger and still working. My son would love to live here as would I.

Opinions on relocating (I still own an underwater home in Westchester that is going to a beast to sell)? vere weather shifts of this area are really tough on me physically.  Read More

Taxes, Taxes, Taxes - 6/28/2014
Here in Westchester County, New York...local taxes; especially school taxes, are among the highest in the nation...which is why people usually move out at retirement. In fact, food, entertainment...everything...though plentiful and more varied and available than most places in the U.S...are very expensive. 15 to 25 to 30 thousand and up per year for an average-sized property is not uncommon, the more desirable the municipality in which you live. Only the cities are a little cheaper...but they have some of the other problems associated with most cities, not the least of which are many of the problems with big city schools in most parts of the Read More

Don't do it to yourself! - 12/19/2006
I have lived in Yonkers over 20 years now and I can tell you that the cost of living here is ridiculous. The school system is awful. We have had scandals here with our Board of Education for a long time. The price for renting a one bedroom is about $1,100 per month. The whole area is on the decline even with the so called "Urban Revitalizations." If you can make it where you are...don't move Read More
