You either get it or you don’t. - 11/14/2019
We moved here 13 years ago from Seattle. I have no regrets whatsoever. People are friendly, the beaches are pristine , the schools are wonderful and crime is very low. People either love it here or hate it. I love it ! And contrary to other posts , there are many educated women ( and men) here and Ivan honestly say I don’t know any housewives who bow and scrape to a husband! Read More

Good for a visit but not to live if educated - 3/10/2019
I moved here four years ago so I have had an opportunity to really assess what is going on. I am moving. This is a nice place to visit not live if you are an educated professional and especially if you are a woman. Women are supposed to be baking pie and seeving their husbands. Still. There are way too many old people. I had high expectations with the lovely Performing Arts Center. But the theater productions are mostly very amateur. The live National Theater broadcasts are wonderful. There are many very nice people here just not much intellectual stimulation which I guess means you need to stick closee to the big cities. The downtown is very ugly. The town decided all the trees should be removed because it cost too much to cRe for them. That should give you a clue. Much mismanagement. Discussion of the state taking over the port which it should do so it doesn’t keep losing money. A few good restaurants and allot of touristy cheaper fare. Beach is the best on the coast and if you Read More

Moving from London, UK next Summer 2018 - 7/26/2017
I came across this website, as my wife and I will be moving from London, UK to Oregon in order for my wife to be closer to her parents.

Needless to say it can be daunting beyond belief, upping and leaving a city like London for a quieter life. We have considered Eugene, but we also love the idea of Newport being on the coast. 10 years living in the chaos that is London City is enough to make anybody want to get away from it all.

I am interested to learn a little about job prospects in Newport. Ultimately we need to be within 2 hours of Florence, which is where my wife's parents reside.

My wife works in childcare, and I work in phone and email based customer service but both of us are bright individuals, not afraid to take on new challenges.

Any pointers would be much Read More

Newort Review - 1/14/2014
Newport, Oregon is a wonderful place to live. We moved here mainly for our health, from the big cities. Our only regret is that we didn't here sooner. And that guy from North Dakota... I never saw an uglier place, and the people generally had their nose stuck in the air. Who wants to live in place where everybody is the same Read More

Almost always windy - 7/14/2013
The central Oregon coast is beautiful with long sandy beaches and sunshine about 3-4 months of the year. We don't mind the winter rain, but we wait 9 months for sunshine only to be greeted by 20mph winds for walking along the beach in the summer.  Read More

Quality of Life - 3/4/2013
I moved to Newport from Fresno, CA back in the late l980's and wish I had come sooner. The air is clean and the small town atmosphere is great. I love seeing everything green instead of the brown of California. Like any place else, one has to spend some time here to appreciate the virtues. The winters might be brutal to some, but being able to get around town without facing traffic jams more than makes up for the rain. There are a number of fine restaurants if one takes the time to look. During the summer we get our share of "beach trash" like most coastal cities...homeless, druggies, thiefs. The local police do a good job of keeping the streets clean. I have had four children raised from kindergarten through high school and wouldn't live any where else if I had it to do over Read More

A major disappointment... - 11/10/2012
I have lived in many parts of the country (and world) due to my husbands career in the construction industry, and Newport is honestly one of the worst places I have ever been. I am originally from Seattle, and prior to coming here we moved from Williston, ND. People here are less friendly, less educated, less cultered, less interesting, less tolerant and have little to no work ethic. I am not a snob, in fact it takes very little to impress me, but this is the most pathetic unaccepting uninteresting unmotivating lowest class place I have ever been. The only thing that is beautiful here is the beach...that is if you don't step on a dope needle and manage to get here the one month a year its not too foggy to see it. Nothing to do from Sep - Jun but go to Fred Meyer and watch people deal drugs in the parking lot. Oh, and don't waste your money eating out. Despite the abundance of fresh local seafood and organic produce - you won't find a decent meal here. Good luck! I can't wait to Read More

Weather - 8/24/2011
I have lived in Newport for approximately 10 years the weather is a constant factor in how you plan your day. Being on the coast the weather is fairly consistent it rains for 3/4 of the year you have to learn to carry a raincoat in your car wherever you go because you never know when a rainstorm will roll through. It is also always breezy or flat out windy. It is a very rare occasion when the wind isn't blowing in one form or another. there is also the Fog to contend with during the summer months the Heat in the valley area will pull the fog in over us and keep us cooler than the rest of the state which means much more tourists and day trippers coming into town to escape the heat. On the days when we do get sun we have an average temp in the high 50's to 60's we do occasionally get into the 70's and rarely we get into the 80's or 90's but it has been know to happen. When the sun does shine it is spectacular with the breezes blowing off the ocean it's not bad place to live you just Read More
