Awful! Don't come here! - 6/9/2006
Texans treat everyone like crap and you are beneath them. The high price of property tax will kill you, and, after 20 years, you will find out you made no profit on your house after all. Sucks! Restaurants? Franchise City so if your idea of cuisine is Wendy's..well, then Houson is for you. Avoid this city as it

Health concerns - 6/2/2006
I lived in Houston for 22 years and moved recently. Overall, Houston is good place to live. It's not the terrible place some people paint it, and it's certainly not a cowboy city like sometimes the city itself likes to portray.
Cost of living: cheap. Duh. Even in good parts of town, it's reasonable. The area around the medical center and Rice University is great. Montrose, the Heights... Other areas are fine too-you just have to be willing to live with diversity-poor people are visible here, but many other cities don't allow them to be seen-which I think is worse.
Culture: Diverse! You can see everything! You just have to know where to look. The high school in my neighborhood had kids who spoke 65 different languages from 53 different countries.
Recreation: You Can go outside. Not in the hell of summer (as anywhere in Texas), but don't let people tell you it's an a/c bubble. For most of the fall-winter-spring, the weather is awesome. Yes, the

Houston,TX Quality of Life - 5/30/2006
Houston has a diverse population, varied cultural and entertainment opportunities and advanced medical facilities. The cost of living is low and has a relatively low tax base. However, the quality of life could be much better. The air and water pollution from numerous petrochemical refineries, power plants, port facilities and vehicles, and high pollen/mold counts contribute to health problems by individuals who have allergy or respiratory problems. Individuals who do not currently have those problems can acquire them while living here. The traffic congestion and gridlock also reduce the willingness to go through the hassle to travel any large distance within the city. Outdoor activities in parks etc. are very limited except for water sports. Hiking, walking activities are 1.5 - 3 hours drive each way to get to state/national parks. Other items of note, nine months out of the year the temperature is in the 90's and the humidity is also betwee 85-100% in the summer. The

H-Town vs Other States - 5/29/2006
I am an out of state Houstonian, and I love Houston. It is a city that has a lot to offer and very few things to envy from other big cities. I think that I got drawn to Houston becuase I am a "foodie" and an aspiring restaurant owner. I have many friends all over the continental United States and I think that Houston ranks at the top of my list when it comes to Housing. Buying a home or town house is a much more attainable dream to the regular Texan than in any other state. I have friends who tell me that they would like to come down to Texas just because they would like to start a family and be able to own a house. It may be that I have friends liviong in cities like Miami, San Diego, New York, Atlanta and Washigton DC. I think that these are all metropolitan areas that compete in size, population, and business (corporate headquarters). Overall I think that in terms of housing costs H-Town is at the

The cost of living in Houston is reasonable, but if you're buying a place, be aware of property taxes and figure that into your housing cost. Plan for regular tax

Dont be conned-Houston isnt nice - 5/23/2006
Dont let anyone make you believe that there is anything positive about Houston. It is a city full of open sewers and smog. People with asthma or any type of breathing disorder will have a terrible time. It is a very dirty city, and you see lots of poor people everywhere. Many buildings on them have barbed wire all over them because burglary is so rampant. For a southern city, it is very expensive. The prices here are much more than what I was expecting. It does not feel like a safe place. Every day on the news there is a story about a driveby shooting, or a home invasions going on in upper class expensive neighborhoods where you think those type of things shouldnt happen. Right now the news is covering the West Nile virus a lot because it is all over Houston right now because it is a breeding ground for mosquitos and whatever else is filthy and depraved. Property is cheap here, but only on the outskirts of the city where you have to commute 2 hours to get to Houston central. In short,

Houston is so disappointing - 5/22/2006
Houston is the nation's center for sprawl and pollution. It even beats L.A. as far as I am concerned. The traffic is horrible. I learned that outside of the most urban centers, it is not required to take a Driver's Education class-- instead parents can teach you. Since Houston is so dependent on commuters from the surrrounding counties, that means that that 1/3 of the people who take one of Houston's 7 major highways never had to prove to a real person that they understood the rules of driving. And it shows, beleive me. In the 2 years that I have lived here, I have gotten into 3 accidents none of which have been my fault (and one involving a drunk driver). People here are either rich, pretending to be rich, Hispanic, or totally insincere.
As far as physical beauty, Houston is utterly lacking. No hills, no water, no old architecture, nothing. Houston is a giant strip mall which is surrounded by a constant flow of traffic due to a scourge of ramapant, irrational
