Mixed bag - good and bad - 6/25/2006
Houston has its pros and cons, sure. I live in the inner loop area, ahich (I think) is MUCH preferable to the sprawling suburbs (where I work, actually) because of access to things to do - both family activities (wonderful zoo, beautiful Hermann park, excellent Children's Museum, fantastic free shows and concerts at Miller Auditoriom, amazing variety of cheap interesting restaraunts, etc), and the bar/club/restaraunt scene, which I can't say I know much about.

Schools are iffy - you really have to be careful. I am already a little stressed about the prospects of moving into a) a more expensive neighborhood than I can afford b) the suburbs c) send my child to private school or d) be a pushy mom and work the magnet/ gifted system, which appears to be pretty stratified as far as socioeconomic/ race status goes. This is a big detractor, but it is a problem with any big urban system, and I have heard that Houston is better than most - not as impossible as NYC for sure. Read More

THE CRIME RATE HERE IS HIGHER, AND THE EDUCATION IS THE LOWEST IN THE COUNTRY!! SO FOR ALL OF YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT HOUSTON, GET OUT!!!! WHEN YOU LIVE ANYWHERE IN TEXAS YOU WILL FIND THAT WE HAVE A BETTER EDUCATION SYSTEM, BETTER ECONOMY, AND SOME OF THE NICEST PEOPLE YOU WILL EVER Read More

Views of a lifelong Houston resident - 6/22/2006
I've read many of the comments about Houston and some of them I found a little bizarre. I've lived in or around Houston for over 40 years and I don't really like it. I intend to move when I retire.
The CONS for living in Houston-
1. The climate. The heat and humidity are horrible from May through September. You can walk outside at 6:00 a.m. and start sweating within 5 minutes. The winters aren't as bad, but when it is cold, it's usually a wet, very windy cold that is miserable. We probably have maybe 30 days out of the whole year that are really nice - humidity below 80% and the temperature not too cold or too hot.
2. The lack of culture. Houston likes to pride itself on it's cultural activities which is pretty funny. I've travelled to many cities that do have culture - Houston doesn't. We have a very small area of town that has museums and theaters. They're nice but can in no way compare to cities like New York, Paris, Rome, London, etc.

The heat is rough... - 6/20/2006
...but people make all the difference. Having relocated to Houston six years ago from the midwest, I never expected to like living in south Texas. I don't like the heat nor nine months of summer, but the people we (my wife and I) have been fortunate enough to meet here are engaging and sincere. There is still the pain of major city living, and the struggle with that will never subside. However, I suppose if you are willing to meet people and share yourself, the surface of the sun might be a nice place to live.

There is one thing about Houston that confuses people. "Cost of Living" calculators make Houston look cheap, but it is deceptive. In a city that considers a forty minute commute one way reasonable, housing is all relative.

I guess you got to pick your battles.

Houston is a great city - 6/16/2006
Quality of life is an equation composed of professional/work opportunities, access to the arts and culture, quality education, health, affordable housing, weather, the people, and more. Contrary to popular belief of those who have spent no, or little, time in Houston, it is a very green (literally) city with lots of trees and parks. Yes, we need the foliage to offset the industry that is in our backyard and is the lifeblood of the Gulf Coast and a resource for the nation...energy. It affords many people the opportunity to live a king's life, in a king-size house, for amazingly little compared to the rest of the nation. Even moderate income earners can afford a decent lifestyle. Houston's friendliness was demonstrated by the response to Hurrican Katrina evacuees, many of whom remain in Houston and are rebuilding their lives here. Unfortunately, with Katrina came a higher crime rate...we will have to see how that turns out. One of the best things about Houston is the SUN...we see Read More
