Houston,TX Quality of Life

Houston has a diverse population, varied cultural and entertainment opportunities and advanced medical facilities. The cost of living is low and has a relatively low tax base. However, the quality of life could be much better. The air and water pollution from numerous petrochemical refineries, power plants, port facilities and vehicles, and high pollen/mold counts contribute to health problems by individuals who have allergy or respiratory problems. Individuals who do not currently have those problems can acquire them while living here. The traffic congestion and gridlock also reduce the willingness to go through the hassle to travel any large distance within the city. Outdoor activities in parks etc. are very limited except for water sports. Hiking, walking activities are 1.5 - 3 hours drive each way to get to state/national parks. Other items of note, nine months out of the year the temperature is in the 90's and the humidity is also betwee 85-100% in the summer. The extreme heat and humidity severely limits outdoor activities.
