Very affordable living, nice cultural diversity

Houston is a great place to live in many respects. The cost of living is very low (except for some very high property taxes, but they're changing those), the winters are nice, and, for those who enjoy eating, there are many good, affordable restaurants. The museums and parks are okay (nothing like New York, but decent). There is relatively little to do in terms of outdoors activities (no good hiking/biking/camping/rafting/beaches). Galveston is 1 hr away and has a crappy beach and some sailing/fishing. The Texas Hill country and Austin are about 3 hrs away. My wife and I are the outdoors-type, and we joke that our favorite thing to do in Houston is go to Austin (and surrouding areas) where there is more biking/hiking/camping/rafting/waterskiing/etc. Houston is nearly unbearable during the summer time (and you might have to skip town when the occasional hurricane rolls through), but the winters are very pleasant.
