Review of Houston, Texas

Lots to Do but Extremely Hot in the Summer
Star Rating - 7/29/2009
There is lots to do, not just in Houston, but in the areas surrounding Houston. Visit the forums at www.frugaltexas.com to read about budget friendly activities, restaurants and shopping in the Houston area. If you don't mind driving you'll be able to experience an enormous amount living in the Houston area. From the beaches down in galveston and the islands off the coast to even College Station where the George Bush Library is located you'll always have something interesting to do. There are lots of opportunities for outdoorsy activities as well. Sam Houston Forest is to the north of Houston. plus there are lots of lakes and hiking trails around. There are wineries as well. I never run out of affordable things to do. Beware, it is exceptionally hot in the summers so you do need to look for indoor activities. Tons of museums though. You don't need to live inside of Houston to enjoy the amenities and work. You can live in one of the surrounding areas which may suit you better.

Everywhere in Texas is hot in the summer. In fact, Austin and Dallas are usually even hotter than Houston. Houston must be the most underrated large city in the country. It's amazing the negative exaggerations I hear people saying about it. I just don't get it. Many of them even live elsewhere within the state of Texas! Thank God I didn't listen, because I've had a blast since moving to Houston several years ago. Houston: - Ranks in the top 4-6 ranked restaurant scenes in the country (don't believe me, look it up) - Has a wonderful Museum District and ranks 3rd in the US in amount of fine arts museums space - Has a Theater District second in size only to NYC's Broadway - Is one of only a handful of US cities with permanent symphony, opera, theater and ballet - Has pro-sports - Has good job market - Has great diversity and an international atmosphere - Has nice weather 8 months out of the year ... and all available for a reasonable cost of living. Are there things Houston could improve on? Sure! But wow, it sure is a lot better than people give it credit for. Anyone who is on the fence about Houston needs to take a second look (and maybe the city needs to hire a good PR firm, because the rest of the country and even the state sure do seem uninformed!)
