Wide Open with Opportunities

I lived in Houston for 17 years and moved there from the Bay Area. I found it to be friendly and wide open with possibilities.
I am an outdoor enthusiast and although it doesn't have great amenities for this, I found bicycling, running and the Downtown Y. You can definitely find your niche. The outdoor community there is small and close knit and friendly. The area northwest of the city, about 50 miles out is fabulous for bicycling with many small paved roads. The climate is great for bicycling. YES YOU DO GET USED TO THE CLIMATE IF YOU ARE ATHLETIC. If you're a couch potato, well what can I say,.....there's air conditioning.
I now live in Denver and what I really miss about Houston are the cultural opportunities. From Houston Grand Opera ($cheap seats for students or those who wait for tickets to be turned back in), the free concerts and plays in Hermann Park and the art collections. I lived in a cheap apartment in the midst of the museum district (the heart of all of this culture).
The one really unique thing about this city is that its been called the most racially integrated city in the country. The reason given is NO ZONING LAWS. While I loved the ethnic mixture I hated the lack of zoning laws. Property rights are hardly ever questioned and there is no protection for historic structures.
It is a great place to make a living.....the job market has historically been extremely strong and the cost of living is very low.
