Review of Houston, Texas

I am not here to make harsh comments b/c I am not from Houston, Tx. I currently live in NY and looking to relocate to Houston, Tx but reading the reviews makes me have mixed thoughts. Shouldn't we consider that every large city has high crime rate? Having lived in NY almost all my life, I can say the crime rate is pretty high and is it really comparable to Houston? Is crime really as high as NY's??? Or is crime rate really based by certain towns or cities? I do care about crime rate more so than anyother category b/c it's important to know you live in a safe place. No one wants to be walking with eyes behind your head all the time and comments posted here really make you feel that way. Is it really that bad?

Hi, Mary: I'm a native Houstonian. I wouldn't discourage you from your choice, but keep doing the math and research. I've seen Houston go through a lot of change-some good, some not so good. Our population continues to explode. Yes, we have one of the best economies in the country but we also keep going through serious growing pains to maintain it. Our crime rate IS increasing, and our police force is short-handed and overworked. Cost of living is excellent, but I see increases on things there too to accommodate so many people, native and transplant. What I would suggest is that you just keep an eye on Houston's progress, crime stats, real estate market and population (you know, the basic stuff) for a while before taking the leap. But if you do decide to move here, as a native, I say "Welcome!"

As a proud Houstonian I have to say that yes crime is high here and on the rise. Almost everyday now we hear about some new bank robbery or other. So don't be fooled into thinking that everything is wonderful here, many people are being layed off of their job and for whatever reason feel it is okay to rob others of their hard earned money. Property crime is also on the rise, as neighborhoods who said they have never had property crime say they are seeing break-ins as well. Most of our schools are inner city and have terrible ratings. Our family has been homeschooling these past few years to try and avoid the high violence (even in primary schools) and over-taxed school system. But finally I have to add taht I do love my metropolis. It's rich international culture, the venues, the people that can be down right nice (when they aren't behind the wheel), and the beautiful skyline. If I ever move(and I'm considering it)I will miss this crazy town. Rosalie

houston is filled with psychopaths - there is not one street you can walk down without being accosted by some petty criminal - crime is out of control and the police will not protect you - if you still move here - get a gun and do not hesitate to use it. I moved here from NYC 4 yrs ago with liberal tendencies - discard them and learn to shoot to kill if you do not heed this warning - oh, prepare to be bored out of your mind when you are not being attacked
