Review of Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is EXACTLY what you think it is
Star Rating - 5/20/2018
- No history and no future

- Profound cultural naivety

- Rude, brash people who offer no warmth or hospitality.

- High crime

- Nil job market outside of hospitality

- Two seasons, hot and cold

- Worst retail offerings, stuck in the 1990s

- Worst produce, nothing is fresh, nothing is local and everything is from Fresno and priced like it is from Hawaii.

- No family oriented dining scene, all chains.

- No access to real civilization other than the local scum

- Worst, most dangerous driving conditions due to the 24/7 lifestyle and stress that comes with hundreds of thousands of people in poverty and/or some other type of serious distress.

- Inescapable gambling and drinking scene, it is even in public restrooms.

- Lackluster education system to the tone of slot machines in the short distance.

- No interest and understanding of sense of community, everyone hoards up in little "stucco boxes" and fends for themselves, post-apocalypse style.

- Depressing, postage stamp sized properties with no diversity or character, everything looks the same -- and consequently so do the people.

- Desert, brown death...

- Circus shows in 2018

- Too many negatives for middle class life in America

People with such negative comments about a town normally have something else going on inside of them. I read both your post and Michelle's reply and I feel like we are living in two different towns. I've never been a victim of crime. I've driven close to 150,000 miles in eight years here in Las Vegas and have never had a single traffic incident. Never. Not even a fender bender. Alcohol and drugs? Of course as you know they are everywhere. I don't drink and do not remember one single encounter since I have lived here when I have even had a conversation with someone that has been intoxicated. I disagree as well with your assessment about middle-class lifestyle and Las Vegas not being a good fit. I believe it to be just the opposite. I've lived in Manhattan New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco. Now those are cities that definitively speaking have no real middle-class or no chance for the middle class to even afford a residence. Here, that's not true. I'm a medical doctor and have not had any problems finding a job as you put it. Yes, I went to medical school and maybe your review is not geared towards professionals but I can tell you: the town with an M.D. degree you going to be making well into the six figures your first day at work. I know I did. And all of my colleagues as well. Even though I'm a physician I still consider myself middle-class and you probably are aware housing here is a third of what it is a more sexy cities in the United States such as New York or San Francisco. Your first comment regarding no future. Multibillion-dollar sports franchises have either moved to Las Vegas or are currently in the process of moving here. Businesses like that don't relocate and commit billions of dollars without a future. As far as the people are concerned they seem pretty nice to me. I treat elderly patients all day long and they are grateful and generous in their kindness towards me and are happy to have someone that cares for their well-being. I really don't recall any negative instances at all not a single one in the eight years I've been here with any person. Maybe one road rage incident but that's about it. I think if someone sees the strip in downtown as dens of iniquity rather than just places to have a good time, but I just look at them as places to step out once a month to see a show, have a nice dinner, people watch, take date to go shopping. I've lived in some pretty boring places. Cities that had several million people that had nothing to do after 10 o'clock at night. Vegas does. I like that idea though I happen to like a city that has some edge to it and maybe a little bit of danger as long as I can keep in arms distance from it. I'm sorry that your experiences here have not been the same as mine or my colleagues and/or friends but I found the most of the reasons that a person either likes or dislikes a place is based upon what's going on internally as opposed to what's going on around them. That's just my observation. I do agree with you though about one thing and that is that will do tend to isolate themselves and segregate themselves or in their homes. Blinds are drawn and very rarely do people interact with each other. That's too bad there is a lack of community here which I think bothers some people more than others. I don't mind it as I like to be left alone anyway. I'm not really a wife and two kids and neighborhood BBQ type of guy but I do get your point on that one. I still think Vegas is a good call for someone that has middle-class money, likes relatively good weather with the exception of some hot months in the summer and wants to live in a city with action and things going on around them even if they don't partake but every once in a while. Stay sober. Don't gamble. Stay away from bad influences and you'll be just fine out here. It's not magic and applies universally to pretty much any place you choose to live. It does help to have a good education and a strong career I'll admit that. Anyway, my time here has been positive so far. And one more thing, reading about how terrible the doctors are in Las Vegas? Do your homework and choose wisely. My neurosurgeon is valedictorian from Stanford medical school. My cardiologist was second in his class at Harvard. I could go on and on but there are intellectually strong, well skilled and talented physicians out here. There are also bad ones. I could say the same for New York City Boston and Portland Oregon for that matter.

What an eloquent, articulate comment! I agree with everything you said. The six people who down voted your comment are the 1991 Honda Civic owners with facial tattoos, ten children all from different women/men, criminal records spanning five states who throw trash out of their car windows and beg outside of stores. Run, run as far away as you can from this nasty, guttural cesspool of human waste!

Relax. I went back to my college town where we hold our own. Everything I said about Las Vegas is true and everybody knows it, some deny it. Now I see doctors that went to school nearby and STAY IN MY COMMUNITY, instead of moving to LAS VEGAS. Your city is for simple minds and simple pleasures and that all there is to it.
