Review of Minneapolis, Minnesota

I need feedbacks....
Star Rating - 7/2/2009
After reading many of the opinions,I have to say that i am a bit concern. To begin with; I have never gone to MN, but have read plenty of it. I am a single mother of a five year old boy, with an ESL teaching degree and was thinking of MN as my future home (Puertorican, born in Buffalo but currently in P.R.). I realize it is a big step but i have wanted to move back to the states for the longest, and really looking foward to MN. After reading about the coldness, and rejection towards outsiders really worries me. It is a shame that people still have this sense of rejecting others because of the race or origins, its 2009 and our world is a ""multicultural complex mixture"" (like i call it) of many people put together, which is the most rewarding gift we can have as ""people"". Anything, anybody can tell me will be very welcome....Thank YOU!

It is freezing here sometimes and hot and humid other times. I am a native Minnesotan, I guess I did not realize that I was rude or cold to people. I have lots of friends who are not from here whom I have met through all kinds of venues at all different stages of life. I have always lived in the Twin cities and love Minneapolis, where I live and work now. I love the diversity and the arts and the lakes.

I wouldn't worry about it. You will make the transition fine. It's seems MN nice is such a phenomenon that any possible experience that you have with a person that is somewhat superficial is ascribed to being MN nice. I am from Brooklyn, NY and moved to St. Paul about 10 years ago. People here talk about superficial niceness and not inviting you in for more? I spent the 80s and 90s in Manhattan in the same apartment and barely knew my neighbor. They were pleasant in the hall, but didn't invite me in for more. Are these Minnesotans that somehow moved to NYC? There may be some truth to MN nice, but I think it is more of a US issue than Minnesota. I was mugged 3 times in NYC and none in Minneapolis, so in my mind, I'm already ahead! As an East Coaster, this was the best move I ever made for my family and I. My son is in a magnate school in St. Paul and my wife and I are happy with the relocation. There is a lot of diversity in the St. Paul school my son attends, as there are children from all over the world. I find it a very open, cultural, and intellectual town. I am certain you will be able to adapt here; it just may take a bit of time. I would join a Puerto Rican club. There are many diverse clubs to join if you look on facebook. Yes, it is a bit colder, but not that much worse than NY. However, it's way colder than Puerto Rico! You just need to dress warmer.

I don't know what people have been saying but it's completely not true. Minneapolis is a cosmopolitan city with people from all over the world. I moved here 4 years ago and I can honestly say it is by far my favorite place I've ever lived. The people are super nice, and very open to outsiders. I believe all the comments you read were about rural Minnesota not Minneapolis.

I 've been here four years now and most people I've met never get used to the winters. It seems to get worse every year. I am also a single parent and I just don't like nor trust the people, no lie. Minnesotans are going to get definsive but they are a bit sheltered. Fake nice ... Yes, it's diverse but segragated as most of the cities in the US. Healthcare is good and there are alot of activities for children.(that's what kept me here) The single life is very borig and lonely especially if you are a woman of color moving here with out family. No lie. NO one else can relate. If you are looking for a place you can call home, this is not it. I am going to move some where with warmer weather and people. Oh, and if you are a renter, watch out for slumlords. 80% of minneapolis landlords are. (it was in the startribune newspaper a few months ago) email me and I can tell you more.
