Review of San Diego, California

Sure the weather is great all year long...

But it's just not worth it to our family anymore. We almost got a home invasion last night! Someone was going around our neighborhood trying to find unlocked houses to burglarize. Luckily I was able to lock all the doors and windows after I saw the door handle being grabbed before my very eyes. There were driving a car around and stopping at dark houses to try and do "quick runs." And the police can do nothing about it. I live in Mira Mesa, which is just north of the Miramar Air Base, just outside of San Diego. We have lived here for about 6 years now, first in an apartment, and now in a rental home. We cannot afford to purchase a house so we have to rent. At least we are now in a HOUSE instead of a dingy apartment which was costing us the same amount of money per month. The tax rate here in CA is abomibale. It's too expensive to live anywhere in So Cal anymore. Everyone in my family is looking to move out of state. My mother already has and she vacated to North Carolina. My sister is going next year too. After last night both me and my husband are now looking to move up to Portland to be near relatives. It really sucks, as I do like San Diego and I wish that we weren't so crowded and taxed. Especailly the crowding. It's like living in a rat cage. Traffic is terrible, just terrible, hours long communtes. I have to plan my whole day so I'm not out on the road after 3:30pm running errands. Crime is everywhere now, everything is drying out (we cannot water our lawns anymore, have to conserve you know) our house is falling apart. We just can't take it anymore.

I'm sorry you were nearly robbed. According to the San Diego PD, the crime rate has decreased steadily since 1990, and in 2009, we had the lowest crime rate since 1963. Your experience (and that of your neighborhood) is apparently not typical. As far as the crowds go, you're right it is more crowded. Commutes are worse in some places, better in others. I have not seen an hour drive, however, at any time, to any place (that was still in San Diego city), unless something extraordinary was wrong (massive accident + rush hour + lane reduction due to construction). I however, wholeheartedly agree that housing is absolutely too high when compared to the average income.

Well yeah, living in Mira Mesa is terrible. I had a sublet there for 3 months and then got the heck out. Not sure what your commute is if it takes hours because the median commute time for the city is a little over 20 minutes. It's rained a bunch here this winter but why would you live here if you wanted a huge lush lawn? If you live in a real San Diego neighborhood with character, you'd feel a lot different about the city.

I have lived in La Jolla for the past 5 years (and worked near UCSD). My husband and I left northern Michigan because there just wasn't any work there and the winters were the worst. My husband was (he's passed away) a math teacher and we did the math before moving. We figured in the cost of keeping up our home. The heating bills were $400/month. Snow removal, $100/month. Lousy food, shopping, any kind of life, priceless. Wear and tear on vehicles, horrendously expensive. Winter clothing, the same. Travel. It costs more to fly into that little town than it does to fly to Paris, France. In the end, it was apples to apples. Yeah, I miss the few nice winter and fall foliage moments, but I can get those with one drive to Julian, CA. Not only that, but the people here are always smiling and friendly. I have met a few snobs, but they aren't the norm. That's just not true. It's how you present yourself that makes the difference. I also got sick of living in a small town and everyone knowing everyone's business all the time. When my husband passed away here I was treated with such kindness you wouldn't believe it. Surfers put his ashes in the ocean, I had casseroles appear out of nowhere. It was wonderfully helpful. When I went back to Michigan to have his service, not ONE person offered to help me. The end.
