Diversity, interesting neighbors, undefinable ener

On my block in Beverlywood Adjacent, there are three families from the subcontinent of India, four black families, two Asian families, three latino families, and 7 white families, two of whom are gay couples -- all of whom are linked by their friendliness, dogs, care over houses and gardens, and comfort with diversity, "Crash" aside.
Within driving distance, we have among the best beaches, shopping (malls and specialty stores), farmer's markets, restaurants, libraries, fashion design, museums and galleries, music, zoos and aquariums in the world. And if you garden, practically everything grows here, except peonies, which I truly regret.
And did I mention the produce? Two asparagus seasons, two artichoke seasons, amazing citrus, avocados, every kind of stone fruit, many grape varieties (all delicious) fresh corn for months -- I'm horrified when I go back East and see what passes for produce in the winter.
We also have gang conflicts (luckily they seem to target each other only), a constant battle with grafitti, insufficient parks, and a very confusing school system (that it turns out can be great if you know how to work the system).
And the cost of living is high enough that everyone works too hard and too long. Also, when friends move more than 20 minutes away, you never see them anymore because noone wants to do extra driving!
It's not paradise, but it's interesting and alive, and going on 16 years, I'm happy I stayed.
