any easy access to the outdoors?

i am considering moving here from chicago. is there hiking, canoeing etc close by without the crazy weekend traffic? what about short road trips?also, how about jobs. i'd actually like to move to portland,or but heard it is impossile to find work, and the economy really suffers. any advice for someone considering a move would be really appreciated!
