Review of Guntersville, Alabama

The good life
Star Rating - 7/15/2008
My wife and I have lived in another country and five different states in the USA. We have now lived in this area for a year and love it more every day.We have retired here after a lot of reaserch on SPERLINGS. We spent five months driving to various areas and small towns in the south before settling here.We could not have done better, what a beautiful area over 900 miles of shoreline on Lake Guntersville which dominates the area in fishing and recreation. The downtown surrounded on three sides by water is very quaint and very frendly. In general the entire Marshall County is just a wonderful place with outstanding schools and athletic programs.Housing is very inexpensive and if you are over 65 there are no real estate taxes , try to find that anywhere else.

Yes, I've researched the Alabama tax structure and am very impressed; I plan a relocation to NE Alabama hopefully this year when I can escape from NY. Is Lake Guntersville suitable for swimming? A search on City-Data.com reveals some possible toxic waste issues on the eastern side of the peninsula. Also, any comments about the "guest workers" (polite term) at the poultry plants in nearby Albertville and crime in an area known as The Hill? I'm also concerned about tornado activity in that larger general area such as hit Arab a few years ago and Ft Payne recently.
