Population growth is destroying Atlanta metro
Star Rating - 12/27/2018
The Atlanta metro area is being ravaged by absurdly fast population growth. I don't even believe the official statistics at this point. I know this is a cliched thing to say, but it's undeniably true. The northern Atlanta suburbs used to be excellent places to live -- well forested, safe neighborhoods, modestly-priced housing, competitive public schools, a population composed almost exclusively of professionals and families, etc. Massive population growth coupled with the redistribution of undesirables from the inner city to the suburbs (as a result of gentrification) has slowly deteriorated all of the aforementioned desirable traits. You pretty much have to live 1.5+ hours north of Atlanta in Forsyth County to find public schools that aren't hopelessly overcrowded.

It may not for whatever reason be reflected in the official statistics because of cover-ups, under-reporting and what have you, but petty crime and all the accompanying ugliness that comes with it has exploded in the northern suburban areas. Anyone who actually lives there will tell you this. 5 years ago it would have been unheard of for a bunch of detestable transient druggie beggars to loiter at shopping centers and street corners, but it happens literally all the time now. Somehow, despite increased economic opportunity, the meth problem seems to have gotten worse and is bleeding into the suburbs from the rural areas. All the high schools have hidden drug problems. And of course corrupt county-level law enforcement won't do anything about it other than token measures.

Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, etc. are still relatively nice places to live compared to most other places, but in another 10-15 years they'll come resemble the ghettoized suburbs of Los Angeles. Mark my words. This has actually already happened to a few places in metro Atlanta such as Stone Mountain, Duluth, Lawrenceville, etc.

Traffic has always been bad here, but in the past 5-7 years it's gotten utterly out of hand, as I'm sure it has in other high-growth places. Traffic used to be horrendous only during rush hour. Now, traffic is atrocious everywhere regardless of what day or time it is. I'm actually hoping the US experiences a recession so that the construction and service industries that attract all the transients shrink and slow growth in the area.

Andreas you are correct though the ignorant responders to your post don't get it. With a so called booming economy in a predatory capitalist system quality of life gets worse for everybody. Increased traffic of course 30 per cent rise in housing prices since 2016 alone. L.A. 50 percent. How is that good for the working folks. restaurants are more crowded and everything costs more, everything. Cars, Gas, flights and 1000 other things. An over stimulated economy hurts all but the very rich. and what about the developers. With a raging economy they destoy everything in sight, plow down forests and build more and more crappy cheap homes and strip malls forever as far as the eye can se.. they rape pillage and destroy and than move on to destroy the next place. How is this a positive for anyone but the greedy developers. They have bulldozed tens of thousands of acres in Las Vegas recently and put up 1000 houses on 8 acres of dirt in 2 weeks and what's more is they are not affordable fot the masses. A 125 K house here in 2011 is now 500 K for the same place due to this "raging economy". So the city is uglier and more inane and sterile and soulless just more crappy 8 dollar an hour jobs and houses that they can't afford to live in. I agree with the general consensus of your point that the "stronger" an economy the worse the overall quality of life in every measurable way that manners is accurate. For those on thew outside looking in that want to be able to afford "things", an event that will cause these asset classes to go down by 30/40 per cent is actually good for all of us looking to buy in to this bubble economy after it hopefully bursts.

You racist POS. Undesirables??? You mean the lower income black people that used to live in the city. Do you realize that because Atlanta decided to knock down all of the projects and white flight decided they wanted to live in the city again, that developers have come in and jacked the inner city pricing up to an absurd level? And now those "undesirables" have been forced to live way out in the suburbs while commuting to the city to work. Anywho, lived here for nearly 20 years. The city used to be a cool, large country town. Now it's trying to prove so desperately that it is young and hip. Atlanta's selling point used to be its southern charm and easy going vibe. Now all these live-work-play complexes are popping up everywhere in the inner ring of the city. Suburbs are becoming crowded because the old residents are being priced out, plus new residents still come here to buy a house, not to rent. Meanwhile, rental units are too high, and even those with money, opt out of them. The nightlife is boring. The city still shuts down by 10-11pm weekdays and maybe 2 am weekends. Everything is event-driven, there aren't too many communities based on things to do other than to eat out, and that gets boring. I'm still not sure what jobs people come down here to work. There are a lot of startups but they don't hire too many employees. Government jobs and service industry. It takes 30 minutes to get anywhere, at minimum. Public transportation is a joke, the trains don't get you to anywhere truly accessible in the city, maybe like 6 stops. The bus routes are a joke.

" I don't even believe the official statistics at this point. I know this is a cliched thing to say, " And that's a huge current problem. The anti-intellectualism and ego-tripping I-know-better idiocy that has swept through America and Europe has created policy nightmares. Change happens and the baby boomers that are now older adults simply have gotten into a mass voting position where the old codgers wax nostalgically (and incorrectly) about the good ol' days (mind you these are my peers). Most of the social ills are of their own making, trying to enforce a mindset that is no longer suitable for 2019, much less 1979. " I'm actually hoping the US experiences a recession" This is EXACTLY the stupidity and anti-American rhetoric that should be red flags. NO TRUE AMERICAN wishes ill on their country and fellow neighbors and citizens. The xenophobic and bigoted mentality needs to go. Younger generations - VOTE. Get your friends to VOTE. Vote these clowns out and save your future - the baby boomers and corps are in it for themselves and going to take it and your future to their graves. Be compassionate to all but take control of the political steering wheel. Restore reason, rationality, education and fairness to all. Good luck and best wishes - there are a lot of us in the older gen that are still fighting for you and this country. Don't give up, let's move forward.

Well, this person doesn't seem like a very reliable source, considering his words "detestable transient druggie beggars" shows his prejudices. The parts of Atlanta which are more accepting of all people have always been ITP (inside the perimeter). We welcome everyone. Intown Atlanta is exciting, progressive, beautiful and safe.
