I have lived in Boston for about two years. Cost of Living: Compared to New York and certain areas of Connecticut, the cost of living isn't nearly as bad. Rents and housing prices within the city are a bit outlandish, but if you live a little bit outside the city, things get more reasonable. Plus, you can sometimes snag a very good deal if you are willing to room with one or more people. While housing is pricey, on the plus side, even in this housing slump, a lot of property, especially in some of the surrounding towns has not only held its value but has also appreciated considerably. Gas is outrageous just like other places in the country, but compared to nearby Connecticut, it's not quite as bad in Massachusetts. The only place you do better around here is in New Hampshire just to the north.
Culture: There is plenty of culture in Boston, especially if you like live music. Plenty of museums to appease as well, including some that you may not even have heard about. The

I moved here from Denver, CO to Boston, MA because of an awesome job opportunity. I must admit that I have been adjusting to the "sticker shock" ever since!! I own a home in Colorado and it is a beautiful 3 bedroom almost 2000 sq foot home with loft, double-sided glass fireplace, and breathtaking views!! You must prepare yourself for your dollar just not stretching as far here in Boston, MA!! I actually live in Revere, MA and the commute really isn't bad on the "T", and I have a very nice, spankin' brand-new apartment with a lot of amenities (though if you have lived in a home for the past decade as I have - living in an apartment again is a "shock" to your sensibilities!) There are great cultural opportunities, sports, parks, beaches!! It really does have almost everything - and I recently took a trip that was only a 2 hour drive with some of the most awesome views that I have seen anywhere (to include Europe!) One of the most beautiful city/metro areas I've seen. Ample cultural and sports options for almost everybody. Some of the most varied and rich food experiences around. I doubt many places in the country offer a more broad, diverse and competitive higher education system. Excellent place for healthcare, legal and finance related careers. Beautiful beaches and national parks are within day or weekend-trip reach.
However, there are two things I must say. First, to fully enjoy this city and take advantage of everything it offers, you have to have the money. Real estate is ridiculously overpriced, as is parking and anything else that requires any amount of space. Owning a car for example can easily be over $1000/month (car payment, insurance, parking, gas, etc); not to mention half of the advantage of driving is consumed by looking for a place to park.
And the other comment is, in typical New England (and more so Bostonian) attitude, no one will ever go an inch

I lived in the MetroWest area as a boarding student in 1999, originally from Florida and having moved every 2 years of my life. Recently resettled in Boston for marriage and educational/career opportunities for which this community is renowned. I think it's a great place for students and for those who like the advantages of a big city. Unfortunately, there are too many "hidden" pockets of poverty and the kind of struggling that shouldn't exist in a community with such a wealth of information and supporters of an improved world. Don't get me wrong, there is a LOT of commitment to community development, but it's contained and selective.

When coming to Boston, it is easy to notice the abundance of student life in the city. From the lines of people forming in front of clubs on friday nights to the over enthusiastic following for the Boston Red Sox. Although as a city town it does have certain perks.
