The real Houston - 8/20/2022
I moved to Houston from the San Francisco Bay area in 1991 after college but I have always had family here.
Houston is not what you think of when you think of Texas politically, it is a Democrat run city at all leverls of government and buts heads with the state leadership all the time.
It also is the most culturally diverse city in the nation, there isn't a ethnic background or religion that is not represented which is something that Houstonians are very proud of!! There have been numerous national articles about our diversity and calling Houston "the American city of the future".

It is an urban sprawl much like LA and we do spend a lot of time driving but the gas prices are much lower than the rest of the country, the nice thing about be the Energy Captail and home to the headquarters of 40+ oil companies.

Houston is also home of the world's largest medical center and is ranked as one of the best cities for Healthcare.

Not a great place - 7/19/2022
There's definitely lots of jobs/economic opportunity. It's quite racially diverse if that's your thing. Houston has awful urban sprawl. Expect awful traffic. Hot as hell in the summers. There's nothing beautiful in Houston. Lots of restaurants, and there's communities for any hobby you might be into. Crime is supposedly high but I don't listen to the news. Floods happen. If you can be satisfied driving all the time and only going to businesses like bars restaurants, museums, theaters, clothing stores, malls, etc. then this might be for you. But if you want good weather, something other than a concrete place that stretches for miles and miles, and maybe some natural beauty, then look Read More

Houston Life - 3/19/2022
Great City too live in. The cost of living is cheaper than most of the state. The education here is really great. Plus to mention health care here is too notch unlike any other in the world. There is so much entertainment for adults and children. This is a city that is very large but very friendly. You will love it Read More

Can't recommend a single thing to see for visitors - 9/26/2021
I've lived in Houston's Galleria neighborhood for the last two years and I lived in Galveston for eight years before that. I enjoy the international community here in Houston and I used to appreciate the fact that it usually doesn't freeze in winter. I'm also happy to say that I don't have to hear many people's political opinions here in Galleria, but I can't say that I like living in Houston. Let me illustrate why coming here for a nice new job may not be worth it...

Floods. This is paved over marsh land. People commonly have their homes and cars destroyed by water here. It's also mosquitoe infested even in Galleria.

Pollution. It impacts our fertility and our cancer rate in Houston. Once I was woken up by a "small" chemical plant explosion that happened 8 miles away from my home. They call the respiratory issues caused by pollution "allergies" here and blame them on the humidity. It's a mixture of humidity, bacteria, and probably every airborne Read More

Sick of Living Here! - 7/5/2021
After 40 years of living in Houston or nearby (League City) I can't wait to get out when I retire. The climate is enough reason. It's 100 degrees for 100 days and now summer entails 2 months of constantly dodging hurricanes. Plus, 16 degrees in the winter should not shut down a city for four days.About all I see in Houston anymore, from when I drive under Beltway-8 in the morning until I drive out in the afternoon is poverty. If not poverty, then an extended lower-lower middle class. Something like 70% of the census tracts inside BW-8 are in the bottom third of national average household income. And there are some areas in my part of town (Clear Lake, which used to be a nice place to live) that are getting so bad I won't go there after night.Crime is out of sight here and the police are nowhere to be seen. They aren't even doing traffic stops anymore so people are driving reckless on the freeways. And about one person a day is getting shot in a road-rage incident. The city Read More

The Newer Suburbs Are Pretty Nice - 6/18/2021
Wow! So much negativity! I’ll try to answer why you are ‘baffled’ that so many outsiders want to move here. From my perspective. But first let me address some of your other well-written but completely inaccurate comments.
Yes, public transportation here is worse that LA. Both LA and Houston are cities that spread horizontally, and street cars and subways don’t make sense like they do in Boston or NYC. FYI - There are no trains near LAX airport either. Have you ever stood in 9 degree freezing sleet for 30 minutes, waiting for a streetcar? I have. Personally, I prefer my private heated/air-conditioned car!
You are correct about one thing -- I’ve lived in Boston and Los Angeles for more than 10 years in each of those cities, and yes, there are more bad drivers here. A greater percentage of stupid, rude, selfish drivers who speed or cut you off or pull out in front of you from a side road at the last moment. Idiots. Just something you have to deal with and be alert Read More
