There is Lot's to Do in Houston - 1/17/2007
I lived near Houston for 10 years and loved every minute of it. There is lot's to do in Houston. Great restruants and shopping. Galveston is near if you like the beach. Being in the center of the country, airfare is cheap flying to the west coast or east coast or down to Cancun. Cost of living is reasonable. Only down side is the Read More

LOTS OF NEW ENGLANDER'S - 1/14/2007
I've noticed a repeated theme from former New Englander's in this online community. It doesn't matter what city they are talking about, if its not in New England they absolutely hate it. There is absolutely no place on earth as heavenly as New England. Yeah maybe....except for the weather and the obnoxious people.  Read More

Wide Open with Opportunities - 1/14/2007
I lived in Houston for 17 years and moved there from the Bay Area. I found it to be friendly and wide open with possibilities.

I am an outdoor enthusiast and although it doesn't have great amenities for this, I found bicycling, running and the Downtown Y. You can definitely find your niche. The outdoor community there is small and close knit and friendly. The area northwest of the city, about 50 miles out is fabulous for bicycling with many small paved roads. The climate is great for bicycling. YES YOU DO GET USED TO THE CLIMATE IF YOU ARE ATHLETIC. If you're a couch potato, well what can I say,.....there's air conditioning.

I now live in Denver and what I really miss about Houston are the cultural opportunities. From Houston Grand Opera ($cheap seats for students or those who wait for tickets to be turned back in), the free concerts and plays in Hermann Park and the art collections. I lived in a cheap apartment in the midst of the museum district Read More

Houston = Cheap - 12/30/2006
I've lived in a few other places besides houston, but i always come back...why? because you can't beat the cost of living here, and for a poor college student, it's definitely Read More

My 3 year stay in Houston - 12/28/2006
Much as changed in Houston over the past 15 years, that upon moving back, I was surprised over how much the area of Spring Branch had 'gone down'. As much as there were spatterings of new buildings and houses, the overall look was predominately ethnic. With that came a different look: trashy streets, people hanging on apartment door stoops, low income apartments, and an ongoing sound of police and fire engine vehicles at all hours of the day. More than once I almost was hit by someone cruising through their red light. So close I could see their face, as IF I was the one in the wrong!
Housing prices are going down in spite of other folks buying up double lots, and placing monstrosity of a house in it's place. It's like seeing night and day in appearance. My brother lives there - over 25 years - and over the past 10, his neighborhood has become predominately filled with low income families. The development looks shoddy in comparison to how it was back in the 90's. His Read More

Moving to HSTN fro Las Vegas? - 12/27/2006
I just graduated from college and I am looking at relocating to a large city that does not get snow. I have read a ton of different views about HSTN, but I am not sure what to believe. Impartial residents please give me info on the best areas for renters. Also which areas to avoid because of crime. Read More

A corperate thing - 12/24/2006
U will not find parks, with inner city familys there.
Rated 1 of the worst cities 4 speed traps and the mayor will being hire more glorified meter maids.. To help crime, but there will be just more hangin out under hwys, writing seat belt tickets. There is no middle class, either over priced homes/apartments or gethos. There council has been the same 4 yr.s, they lack enough members like most other cities. The avg. person will spend a minium of 20 hr.s a week traveling 2 work. Thats providing no 1 wrecks, which u have better odds of hitting a lottery ticket. There rated as very careless drivers. I think anyone with a lic. # ending in a odd # should drive a tow truck and even drives the meat wagon, or make better use of cops and have them drivin the above mention vehicles. This is not bashing houston its just a little of the truth, but dont take my word ch it out Read More

Very affordable living, nice cultural diversity - 12/12/2006
Houston is a great place to live in many respects. The cost of living is very low (except for some very high property taxes, but they're changing those), the winters are nice, and, for those who enjoy eating, there are many good, affordable restaurants. The museums and parks are okay (nothing like New York, but decent). There is relatively little to do in terms of outdoors activities (no good hiking/biking/camping/rafting/beaches). Galveston is 1 hr away and has a crappy beach and some sailing/fishing. The Texas Hill country and Austin are about 3 hrs away. My wife and I are the outdoors-type, and we joke that our favorite thing to do in Houston is go to Austin (and surrouding areas) where there is more biking/hiking/camping/rafting/waterskiing/etc. Houston is nearly unbearable during the summer time (and you might have to skip town when the occasional hurricane rolls through), but the winters are very Read More

Non-biased opinion about Houston - 12/9/2006
I have been reading a lot of entries from people asking about Houston. I moved to Houston in 1995 from Calgary Alberta Canada and I have lived all over Canada. Houston is a tricky place with many faces but it really boils down to the people you meet and the experiences you encounter which will make it a good or bad place. There is no zoning in Houston so it is a city of 4 million but it feels much smaller because it is spread out and no-zoning creates little towns (with their own personalities) all over the city. Also, there is a downtown and after 4PM it closes down except for the restaurants. They have began turning old businesses downtown into condos and there are restaurants and a few bars and of course many theatres but if you are looking for a place with a bustling downtown Houston is not it. In fact, Houston is not really a walkable city at all. BUT there are fantastic restaurants, it has a great ethnic mix, incredibly friendly people and unlike other cities - nobody expects Read More
