Not That Special - 12/31/2005
Having never stepped foot in Texas before, I moved to Houston 10 years ago because of a great job opportunity. Personally, I hate this city. As others have said, the heat is atrocious, the smell in the city is intolerable (think raw sewage), the people are NOT the warm, fuzzy folks others make them out to be, and the majority of the city seems to be comprised of either poorly educated 100%-American rednecks, or illegal immigrants.
In its favor, yes, cost of living is fairly cheap, there are a great selection of restaurants to choose from, as well as many shopping options (from dirt cheap to world-class). However, there really are not that many entertainment options, unless you consider dining to be entertainment (which might explain the Fattest City in America title), or going to the movies and bars. The museum scene is good, but how many times can you do that for fun? There is virtually no original music scene either. Instead, there are hundreds of run-of-the-mill

Weather and bugs - 12/20/2005
I think the weather is great! While July and August are hot and humid the rest of the year is better than nearly anywhere else in the US. After living in Seattle, WA for 17 years, Houston is a dream come true. As far as the bugs, keep your house clean, have an exterminator come out every three months and there is no problem. Use an insect repellent and the mosquitos won't bother you

If you cannot find in houston it does not exist--come here to Houston to shop from Louisiana. Great to have a city like this so close to us.
Great areas outside of Houston are Sugarland, Katy and Pearland--if I moved to Houston I would live in one of these 3 areas and commute

Compared to what? - 10/11/2005
I've lived in 13 cities in 6 states; in just about every climate available - I've even lived in Alaska. Houston certainly has its problems, but overall, I prefer it to all the other places I've lived: Colorado Springs - beautiful but the cost of living is too high.
Denver (and Arvada) - beautiful when the smog isn't too bad, but the cost of living is even higher.
Lubbock - Now THAT is the arm bit of Texas! Actually, the people are nice, it is small enough to get around easily and big enough to have most anything you want -- it's that darn blowing dirt that makes it absolutely miserable.
Nashville (& Hendersonville), TN - my next favorite town next to Austin and Houston. Beautiful place.
Easton, PA - great if you are a history buff -- bad in every other way - it smells like Crayola crayons. I worked in New Jersey but lived in PA because NJ was incredibly expensive.
Clovis, NM - don't even visit -- there is nothing there.
Fairbanks, AK - can you
