Avoid Houston - 11/9/2017
I've lived in Houston for 30 yrs. 87-present. I'm now 62, retired, and about to sell my house. I would avoid Houston for several reasons--huge crime increase, violent crime I might add. Heavy traffic that never gets better despite massive road construction, pollution, and severe weather disasters. I've been through 2 hurricanes here, a tornado, and tropical storm. Luckily I didn't lose my home. Most of the flooding from Harvey was due to poor drainage. Many great areas were destroyed. Developers have made Houston very unsafe by not providing the drainage to carry away rain. For every plus you get here, you get a minus. Collectively this is the worst group of people I've ever met or dealt with. Too many violent, corrupt, and criminal folks here. Drug and sex traffic are major problems here. Prop. insurance is high, and you better carry flood ins. also. To insure my home plus pay the HOA is almost 2400/yr. plus another 2500/yr. for prop. taxes. I'm single, never married, no kids, Read More

Houston is hell! - 9/20/2017
If the floods don't drown you in your bed in the night, the crime rate will hit you. You may be shot in a Walmart parking lot or robbed leaving Neiman Marcus in the Galleria. You can't escape bad experiences in Houston. This website says it is the 2nd most irritated city in the nation. I believe it. The flooding is the worst, all areas of Houston flood and ruin your house and cars. Crime is everywhere. The muggy humidity and heat will drag you down. Live somewhere energetic and safe, not in Read More

A Big, Hot City - 7/11/2017
I'll start in saying that I don't like living in Houston and am very much looking forward to moving. In fact, I've become almost obsessive about finding the "perfect" city to relocate to and hence have spent many hours on this site as well as other researching alternatives. Gathering all this information and reading many reviews on many places has been interesting indeed.

As evidenced by many of the reviews for Houston and other cities likewise, background plays a significant role in one's fondness (or lack thereof) for a given area of residence. I come from a plethora of diverse places, almost all of which known in some way for natural beauty of some kind. I was born in Kirkland WA (0-3yrs), lived next in Carmel CA (3-10yrs), followed by Breckenridge CO (10-18yrs), then Tucson AZ (18-21yrs), then Anaheim CA (21-23yrs), then Mesa AZ (23-24yrs), then Pocatello ID (24-27yrs), and finally now Houston TX (27-30yrs). So, based on this list, I've lived in cities and towns of Read More

Best city I've lived in - 7/7/2017
I was born and raised in Houston, lived in Denver, Colorado for 3 years, Austin, Texas for 8 years and now, San Diego, California for 2 years and I can't wait to get back to Houston! - I will be choosing it as my home again, and raising my son there when we move back, next year. Here is why I prefer it over everywhere else I have ever lived. It is a real city with a ton of variety, opportunities, authenticity, and a primarily honest, kind, and genuine population. It is a huge city, but, Houstonians remain community oriented and connected, in spite of this fact.

Houston has something significant, a big edge, culturally and artistically over the smaller cities I have lived. Most lacking in true culture (museums, sports, variety of things to do) was Austin, next San Diego - we have the beaches and hiking and major attractions, but somehow the culture here simply does not feel authentic - the city feels fabricated and sterile. I learned that most of San Diego's historic Read More

Not so bad, if you choose the right area... - 6/25/2017
Houston is a diverse city, but there are some changes that will only come with age and continued diversity. There is little to no public transportation outside of the inner city, so everyone has a car including their kids -so traffic can be a nightmare at times. Yes, there are hypocrites and racist here as in any other area in the country, but there are more good kind people here than bad. You get what you give, be kind to people and they will be kind to you. Because Houston suburbs are master-planned communities, you really will never really need to leave your community for anything besides work or events, and many people choose to work and live in the same area. So traffic shouldn’t really be a huge factor for everyday living.
Keep in mind, Houston is very large it will take you nearly an hour to drive from the north side of Houston to the south side of Houston. Keep in mind, while the city is full of every ethnicity and religion, the communities and cities within Read More

Don't be fooled by the diversity! - 5/29/2017
Don't be fooled by Houston's diversity. A majority of white people in the area adore Donald Trump, as estimates point out that Trump won ~70% of the white vote in Harris County, and have strong racial resentment towards people of another ethnicity. From experience, I haven't gotten any racial threats from other minorities, but it seems like white people are uncomfortable with me despite being a so-called "model minority."
No, seriously, there are lots of racist white people especially in areas like Memorial, Katy, Cypress, The Woodlands, Kingwood, Spring, Galveston, League City, Deer Park, Pasadena, Tomball, etc. If you find out what these people say about minorities behind closed doors, your mind will go into a rage. Minorities do have opportunities, but they will rarely ever be welcomed by the white majority/ruling class. Whites still cling to the view that blacks and Hispanics are lazy and on welfare, and that they are sick and tired of paying taxes for them while having a Read More

Please read FIRST if you are thinking of moving he - 12/28/2016
Hi all, thank you for your truth about Houston. I'm originally from Cali but have lived all over the US. Unfortunately I have been in Houston for many years and can't wait to move in 5 short months!!! Here is why I would seriously reconsider NOT moving to Houston if you currently have the pleasure of living in a beautiful state. 1) There is absolutely NOTHING to do outdoors because this city is mostly concrete & buildings. If you are an outdoor person who needs nature to calm anxieties & stress, you will hate Houston. Also, I might add if you are moving children here from another state, expect them to be stressed to the max!!! All the people who I have met with kids, absolutely hate Houston school districts. And yes, these are the so called "best schools in the burbs". Think again!
In fact, most of my daughters friends are on anxiety/depression meds. Come spend a day with your child in one of these schools (or should I say jails) and you too will have a panic attack too. 2) The Read More
