Houston Climate is a Big Negative - 11/14/2007
Pay attention to the low "comfort rating" Houston gets on this site: 44 is average, Houston is 24. The temperature is usually hot, and the humidity is almost always high. Even when the temp. is moderate, high humidity makes being outdoors unpleasant. There are only 2-3 days a year when I would even consider dining "al fresco". EVERYTHING is air conditioned, for a good reason. Don't even think of driving a car w/o A/C. Do not imagine that you will be turning your air conditioning off and throwing open your windows at home. I run my a/c all year round--turn it off for a few days in the winter. PLUS: it floods here. We do get hurricane weather and tropical storms. If you are coming to Houston, find out what happens in your proposed new neighborhood when it rains heavily. Is drainage adequate, or do the streets flood quickly? To sum up: Houston is a very pleasant, workable city, once you get to know it, but the climate is unpleasant most of the Read More

Houston is a very pleasant surprise - 11/6/2007
Overnight visitors are often underwhelmed by Houston. But behind our ubiquitous
strip malls and freeways are gorgeous neighborhoods, attractive and affordable custom built homes constructed from the 1960's - 1980's, and even some excellent schools.

The city is viscous w/ diversity and people are warm and friendly. I came for a week three years ago and decided to stay. It wasn't even on my list of places to relocate to. The weather is very pleasant from October - March and hot from April - September.

Plenty of museums and restaurants, two airports, and lots of interesting places to visit w/in a short drive. Its the most affordable US city I've lived in. That's partially due to the sprawl. There is plenty of land for the cuty to Read More

In response to Mrs. Henry - 10/30/2007
If you(Mrs.Henry and anyone asking for advice from complete strangers) have to ask if you should move to a certain place b/c of certain characteristics than you shouldnt move, Or find a more relaible resource to get your information from, there are numerous websites and you can go to Houston Police and Sheriffs department to get the real data. Using those resources would be smart. The crime in Houston has always been high, don't be ignorant and say that it is b/c of Hurricane Katrina Victims. Thats a racist remark to say in a cute way. If you are worried about being surrounded by too many Black People or Black People Period that move to Read More

Crime rate in Houston - 10/23/2007
The crime rate in Houston is above the national average. It is definitely not someplace I want to stay and raise my family. There is an active night life and plenty of things to see and do as a single or couple with no Read More

Best areas to live in?????? - 9/26/2007
My husband & I are expecting our first child & we would like to relocate to a city that has much to offer. We currently live in Raleigh-Durham NC but we are bored to tears here. There are NOT enough private schools, culture, shopping, theatre, arts, etc..... thus we have been looking at Houston for a change. We are concerned about all of the crime & influx of people in need from New Orleans. Is this something that we should really be concerned about? Is there enough positive things about Houston to outweigh the bad? If so, which areas should we consider relocating to? My husband works from home & I am a housewife, so traffic is not of major concern. I welcome ALL feed back & much thanks to all of you in Read More

If you're not careful, you'll be trampled in a cat - 9/17/2007
Mass transit is almost nonexistent. Many of the most popular and populous suburbs are unincorporated and thus must rely on undersized county sheriff and constable departments for traffic control. It is extremely rare to see a patrol car on the roads. People drive as they choose, often quite aggressively, and fear little interference from the law. Driving at night, even on well-traveled roads, you risk being injured or killed in illegal street racing, drunk driving, car-surfing, car-jacking and other escapades.Younger driver have no patience for older drivers, pedestrians, bike riders or anyone else in their way. Elderly drivers who lose their ability to drive can become virtually imprisoned in their own homes. Repeat DUI (DWI) offenders seem to have little trouble driving with suspended licenses and probation requirements. Big pickup trucks SUVs and Hummers (Dummers, as I call them) have little respect for passenger cars and even actively try to squeeze them out of lanes, even the Read More

Houston Weather - 9/4/2007
Houston is a good city. Spring and Early Fall are quite nice. Summers can be hot and humid. Lots of construction going on to upgrade the highways at the moment, but the DOT does a pretty good job on keeping the traffic flowing. There is a light rail system that metro is interested in growing, but for the size of the city - it really ought to have something more in Read More
